1974 Triumph Stag V8 automatic

Highlights

  • Rare Magenta paintwork
  • Original Triumph V8
  • Only 2 owners from new

The Appeal

The Triumph Stag was adored by many, with over 25,000 being produced, it was Triumph's contribution to the popular sports tourer section throughout the 70's. Triumph wanted to stand out from their competitors by making use of their new 3 litre V8, this powerplant gave for a lovely sound and smooth power delivery. The styling was carried out by none other than Giovanni Michelotti and was a favourite not only amongst Stag owners but also within Triumph. Initially designed as a prototype it was adored so much that the design was carried through to production and was used as inspiration for future models throughout the 70's.

The History and Paperwork

  • MOT exempt
  • Non-running and in need of restoring as a project
  • Selling as owner relocating
  • SORN for the last 10 years and not driven since
  • Rare original Magenta paintwork
  • First registered 02/01/1974
  • Part service history, independent
  • Current owner received the vehicle from his uncle, keeping the car within the family since new
  • Current owner has had the engine running previously using a donor fuel tank (not included) as original fuel tank was blocked with sludge
  • Original service book and driver’s handbook present
  • Poor condition overall but all original

The Interior

  • All original interior
  • 4 seat model
  • Configurable as a hard top, soft top, or convertible
This Triumph Stag has a desirable specification which was configured when new. The car was passed from uncle to nephew, meaning only 2 owners since new. The interior has been kept in original condition with little maintenance being carried out recently. Thus, the interior is in need of restoration but offers a great original base to start from. The black leather seats and dashboard are in fair condition with a small tear in the driver’s seat. The carpets and head lining are in poor condition and would need some attention. This vehicle still possesses the original radio and 8-track system, none of which are in working order but still all original. The boot is in fair condition and currently housing the removed fuel tank, a spare wheel is also present.

The Exterior

  • Rare original Magenta paintwork
  • 4 old radial tyres in need of replacing as they have perished
  • Matching original alloys in good condition
  • Areas of rust present across the bodywork
  • Brightwork in good to fair condition
The exterior colour of this Stag is a real eyecatcher and certainly a rarer choice when configured as new. The paintwork is in poor condition overall but again gives for a good original base to restore from. There is some rust that will need some attention and welding, namely around the bottom of the A and B pillars, windscreen and window surrounds and also the wheel arches and the door sills. The 'Stag' plaque on the rear driver’s side has fallen off but is retained with the car, all badges are original following suit with the rest of the car. The current owner has had the fuel tank removed due to sludge within, hence the lack of fuel filler cap in the body work. The hard top is currently fitted with the convertible top still present, however it is unknown if the convertible is in working order as is.

The Mechanics

  • Current owner has had new fuel lines fitted and the engine has run recently with a donor fuel tank (not included in the sale)
  • Original fuel tank has been removed due to sludge and is stored in the boot
  • New battery and spark plugs
  • A non-runner with original engine and powertrain present
  • Current owner has advised new brakes and tyres are needed
As to be expected with a non-runner, this example is in need of some work to get it back running and road legal. The current owner has had the vehicle stored at a local garage who have carried out an inspection. They advised that the engine has run recently thanks to the fitting of new fuel lines and a donor fuel tank as the original has a build-up of sludge within. They have also fitted new spark plugs and a battery when last run. The current owner informs us that when it was last driven some 15 years ago the gearbox worked well and drove as to be expected, of course, the 3L V8 gives for a lovely throaty sound. The engine bay and underside are both in fair, tidy condition with the usual signs of wear and tear you might expect. Finally, this car's name is Veronica, should the new owner like to continue the tradition.

Summary

The Triumph Stag is a real icon of the 1970's within the UK, gorgeous styling combined with a 3L V8 led the Stag to be a favourite for many. This example boasts only 2 owners from new and is a reluctant sale for the current owner who hopes to see the vehicle move on to an enthusiast that can give the tender love and care needed. This example provides a great all original platform to restore from, with certain areas needing more attention than others, it will also provide a great opportunity for the new owner to really make it their own!
