The Appeal
Toyota’s HiLux is the Volkswagen Beetle of the commercial pick up world, a rugged truck popular in any country where tough terrain reigns.
Perhaps no surprise, then, to find this 1974 example in such good condition. It spent its life in the dry climes of South Africa before arriving here in 2022 when it was added to the previous keeper’s extensive commercial vehicle collection.
Now fitted with a 2T engine, it is ready for more work or, perhaps as a distinctive commercial runabout for a workshop. Or perhaps it deserves a lighter life as a classic show star.
The History and Paperwork
- Current V5 present
- First registration on 1st January 1974
- First registration in UK on 1st March 2022
- The Nova document is dated 10th December 2021
- MoT and VED exempt in the UK
- The pickup was imported from South Africa in 2021
- The pickup is registered as a Historic Vehicle
- Registered on HPI and DVLA with original 16L engine but now has 2T engine
The Conditon
- Overall interior is very good with very few signs of use
- Dashboard is well kept for the age of the vehicle
- We are told all electronics, switches, buttons, and gauges work as they should
- Fitted with standalone water temperature, oil pressure, and ammeter in a small gauge pod underneath the centre dashboard
- Red/black two-tone vinyl & cloth bench seat in very good condition, suits the vehicle’s ‘70s styling
- No rips or seen damage to seat upholstery
- Steering wheel in great shape but some scratches and marks present around the hand-hold areas
- Fitted carpet floor mat present, shows some wear but overall good shape
- Headliner in great condition but could benefit from a deep clean and some sagging seen
- Fitted with aftermarket head unit with tape player
- Centre console heater and blower controls missing sliders
- Truck bed in good structural condition marks and dings from normal use
- Light surface corrosion to bed as photographed
- Protective coating covering most bed areas but peeling away on wheel well tubs
- Extended-height load container included as fitted
- This is in good shape with some surface corrosion with no structural issues seen
- Exterior in great straight and glossy condition for the age
- Some scratches, marks, minor dings and dents, minor paint bubbling as shown
- Trim, rubbers, and seals in good shape with some signs of aging but still functional
- Light lenses in good usable condition
- Headlights show no signs of fading from age
- Glass in overall usable condition, some marks present but no cracks
- Steel wheels have good hub caps and some very light corrosion and pitting spotted
- Four tyres show tread but signs of old age and are mismatched brands
- Underside presents well with surface corrosion but does not appear cause for concern
- New load bed fixed on top of existing areas developing as photographed
- Overhauled rear load bed liner and fitted new treated plywood floor
- Cut out rotten floor pans in cab and renewed / welded using correct materials (as per photographs)
The Mechanics
- Vehicle starts, runs, and drives as to be expected for the age
- Visual condition of the engine bay is overall to be expected for the age, some corrosion present, engine swap seems to have been done cleanly
- Toyota 2T engine present
- Drive belt in good condition with some fraying on the edges
- Transmission shifts smoothly, floor-mounted gear selector
- Upgraded to electronic ignition
- Overhauled and flushed through coolant system
- Rewired electric fan
- Stripped and overhauled carburettor
- The owner reported no known mechanical issues
