1974 Porsche 914 1.8

Highlights

  • Rare model in 1.8 litre format
  • Fully UK registered
  • Subject to extensive mechanical refurbishment
  • Holds excellent potential as an upcoming winter project

The Appeal

The child of a collaboration between two German automotive behemoths, the Porsche 914 has always been the lesser known, more curious model in the marque’s stable. Whilst other models at the time utilised a rear engined layout and a primarily 911 derived design, the Volkswagen infused 914 sported a mid mounted, lower capacity engine setup. The results spoke for themselves and 914 was quickly realised to be an entirely brilliant small sports car; smaller body design paired with lightweight construction meant there was an abundance of power to go alongside the dynamic prowess that came from a mid engined layout.
The 914 saw impressive success considering its deviation from the usual Porsche setup, with a great deal of them heading across the pond into the US. The car we have here is one such example. Imported from Connecticut, this 1974 1.8 litre 914 comes to us in barn find condition and is primed to become a fun project for the upcoming winter months. In impressively solid order throughout, and having had a great deal of mechanical refurbishment already undertaken, VMR 592N has had a good bulk of the hard work performed and now needs simply for a committed enthusiast to finish it off and bring it back to its former sporting glory.

The History and Paperwork

  • Manufactured 1974
  • Originally a US car as we understand
  • Imported into the UK in early 2019
  • As we understand the car was sat up for some time in Connecticut, with the last emissions test sticker dating to 1991
  • Fully UK registered
  • Since arrival in the UK the current keeper has been recommissioning the car from a mechanical perspective but is now looking to move the car on to make time and space for other classic car restorations
  • Once revitalised the Porsche will be both tax and MOT exempt due to its historic status and age
  • Dry stored during its time in the UK with the current keeper
  • Accompanied by a selection of invoices for parts bought for the mechanical refurbishment of the car
  • V5 registration document present with the car

The Interior

The Exterior

  • Finished in a wonderful red hue, understood to be the car’s original colour Bahia Red
  • Paint is faded in places are there are some notable areas of blemishing and marking to be seen
  • The car does appear solid from a bodywork perspective but will benefit from a respray to bring up to standard
  • Targa style roof
  • The vendor informs us that the Targa roof is present and will come with the car on sale
  • External trim looks to be complete
  • 15” steel wheels at all four corners

Summary

It's hard not to love the Porsche 914. They come bearing an undeniable charm and are becoming increasingly sought after on the collector market thanks to their fun driving characteristics and overall rarity. This 1974 US market car ticks all the boxes one looks for in a restoration project, impressively solid, largely complete and with a great deal of the hard graft already put in. If you're after an uber cool Porsche project with some serious curb appeal, it's hard to ignore a car such as this.
