Highlights
- Restored in 2011
- Lots of mechanical work undertaken
- Electronic ignition upgrade
The Appeal
One of the favourite classics that appeal to all tastes and pockets. This Midget gem has had some considerable time and effort spent on restoring it in the past and makes it ready to go with most of the mechanicals being overhauled in 2015. Scope to improve and perfect a few blemishes or just pop the roof down, turn the key and enjoy.
The History and Paperwork
- Lots of invoices are available
- Restored by Paul Depper of Cannock in 2011
- Mechanical overhaul in 2015
- Current V5c
Bought by the current owner in 2015 after an extensive professional restoration in 2011 and then subjected to an immediate mechanical overhaul. The engine and gearbox were both rebuilt along with the front suspension and brakes. The car has been used very sparingly since but has been regularly maintained.
The Interior
- Tidy functional interior
- Original seats
- Some areas can be improved
Everything functions as it should in the little cockpit of this MG. The carpets are generally good and all the instrumentation appears to function as it should. The door cards are clean and intact and may have been replaced during the restoration and have aftermarket window winders. The seats seem to be original as the driver’s seat has a couple of splits. The dash is standard metal with a black crackle finish and in generally good order with just a little damage around the rev counter. The steering wheel has been upgraded to a wood-rimmed version and does look the part.
The Exterior
- Deep red shiny coachwork
- Lots of original trim
- Wire wheels with knock-off centres
- New hood and tonneau
The overall condition of the paintwork is still generally good and there’s a decent shine to the dark red finish. There is an area on the bonnet that does require attention where the paint has bloomed and faded after being stored under a cover. Some micro blisters are beginning to appear here and there but don’t seem to have broken the surface. The colour of the car is set off nicely with a lovely set of shiny wire wheels and recent tyres. The hood has been replaced at some time and functions and fits well and has just one small defect in the form of a split in the driver’s side quarter light window. Generally, the car has fared well since its initial restoration by Paul Depper back in 2011 and treating those minor imperfections would be time well spent.
The Mechanics
- Engine and Gearbox rebuild in 2015
- Electronic Ignition upgrade
- K&N pancake filters
- Overhauled brake system
- Poly-bushed front suspension
- Recent clutch master and slave cylinders
- Thermostatic electric radiator fan
Following the purchase in 2015, this car underwent quite a bit of mechanical work. The gearbox needed to be overhauled so while the engine was removed, this too received a rebuild resulting in offering any new owner the confidence that the major mechanical areas are fresh and reliable. The ignition system has benefitted from being upgraded to an electronic version and a pair of nice chrome pancake filters add not only an attractive addition to the engine bay but provide a rather lusty and throaty induction noise. The brakes have been overhauled as has the front suspension which has been re-bushed. More recently, the clutch master and slave cylinders have been replaced.
