The Appeal

Arguably the go to brand for quality sports cars, MG were always leading the pack when it came to stylish, dynamic automobiles, and none so more than the MGB GT. The perfect recipe of performance style and value meant the lightweight 2 door Pininfarina styled coupe was an absolute hit, the little GT quickly won the hearts of many and proudly boasts icon status to this day, standing as one of the most recognisable classic cars of all time and an ideal candidate to break into the world of classic motoring.
A final year chrome bumper car, this 1974 GT in its rare Damask Red hue is a wonderful example of the beloved sports car and is certainly one of the more interesting GTs on the market, coming with an air of uniqueness whilst retaining the vintage charm and appeal that made these little cars so popular in the first place. 

Its legendary 1.8 litre B Series engine has been bored out to 1950cc and been lovingly paired with some choice mechanical upgrades by a selection of enthusiast owners, and as such it stands primed and ready for a new loving MG enthusiasts to take the reins and keep this slice of heritage motoring on the road.

The History and Paperwork

  • Hailing from the final year of chrome bumper production
  • Supplied originally through MG dealer Kennings Limited of Ealing London
  • Backed by a vast comprehensive history file dating back to 1991
  • Accompanied by an impressive selection of invoices for parts bought and maintenance work undertaken by various independent specialist outfits
  • MGB owners books also present with the car
  • The MG proudly sits with a British Motor Heritage certificate highlighting various specs and build details of the car when new
  • Invoices present for engine rebore performed by Sheppard racing LTD in 1993
  • Both tax and MOT exempt due to the car’s age and historic status
  • Despite MOT exemption the car currently holds a current MOT, valid with no advisories until October 2024
  • V5 registration document present

The Condition

  • A marvellously well presented genuine chrome bumper example, in good highly original form throughout
  • Excellent Pininfarina exterior fastback styling
  • Finished in rare Damask Red, the original factory colour scheme for the car as denoted by the accompanying heritage certificate
  • Paintwork is of a good presentable standard throughout
  • External chrome trim is of a high quality and boasts a wonderful shine with very minimal signs of age visible
  • Exterior lighting and glass elements are seen to be in good clean order
  • Sat proudly on Rostyle wheels at all four corners with decorative chrome trim
  • Wheels are all shod to quality Kumho tyres
  • Interior is in thoroughly good order, in largely original shape
  • Black vinyl upholstery, still presenting well, rich in colour and highlighting very little in terms of blemishing and patina
  • Internal switchgear, plastics and mouldings are in fine fettle
  • Switchgear is understood to be in good working order
  • Well sized boot area with full size Rostyle spare wheel and tool set present
  • Desirable three spoke Moto Lita wood rim steering wheel
  • Wood finish MG gear knob for added contrast
  • Clean, well fitting headliner

The Mechanics

  • Legendary B Series four cylinder engine resides under the bonnet, in good well kept order
  • The 1.8 litre unit has been bored out to 1950cc by Sheppard Racing Limited for greatly improved performance
  • Fully working overdrive in both 3rd and 4th gears
  • Fitted with an upgraded Weber 45DEOC carburetor
  • The vendor informs us that the engine head has also been gas flowed and fitted with a mild cam
  • Fitted with Spax adjustable shock absorbers
  • 12 volt battery conversion with hidden isolator switch
  • The MG fires into life quickly and comfortably and in no time settles into a suitable idle
  • On the road the car is reported to provide an excellent overall drive, with notably improved performance over a standard example courtesy of the engine rebore and mild cam fitted
  • The car has recently passed an MOT test with no advisories for added mechanical peace of mind

Summary

The MGB GT has always been a popular car, there’s no question about that. Right from its introduction all those decades ago, the little GT has won the hearts of many car enthusiasts and lovers of truly excellent drivers cars. Cut forward to present day and the GTs have garnered all new levels of appreciation among classic car enthusiasts.
Certainly this is one of the more interesting MGB GTs out there, and one that works the line between originality and modification perfectly, with subtle yet effective mechanical upgrades paired to a highly original aesthetic setup. Naturally because of this, HUL 134N will not only be at home on display at the local car show but is one that makes a wonderful candidate for regular use as a classic daily driver.
