1974 Mercedes-Benz 250 (W114)

Highlights

  • Excellent red paintwork
  • Half leather interior very well preserved
  • Classic Mercedes styling

The Appeal

The W114 is one of those cars which can always be relied upon. There’s a reason some of them have clocked up millions of miles as long-distance taxis around the globe. It is a tried and tested design and a fantastic antidote to today’s throw-away economy.
This particular example is beautifully presented inside and out, with its smart red paintwork exhibiting a deep shine, and the half-leather interior in similarly excellent condition.
As an example of an eminently useable everyday classic, this Mercedes would take some beating. It ticks do many boxes that we can hardly think of a reason not to have one.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1974
  • Previously registered in Northern Ireland
  • Now in Dublin
  • Right-hand drive
  • Stored for some time then recommissioned
  • Documentation and history file to be supplied, including service invoices, MOTs and photographs

 The Interior

  • Beige half-leather upholstery very well presented
  • Carpets, headlining and door cards clean and tidy
  • Excellent, well-appointed dashboard
Opening the door to this Mercedes 250 reveals a sumptuously appointed interior, which remains in fantastic condition throughout. The beige half-leather upholstery on the seats is very well preserved and shows very few sigs of wear. It provides the luxurious feel of leather, along with the soft comfort of cloth.
The carpets appear to be very clean and tidy, with no significant stains or damage we could see. Similarly, the matching door cards are in good clean condition, with few signs of wear to be found. Up above, the headlining is clean and secure, and is a great finishing touch to the car’s fabrics.
The dashboard is trimmed with wood veneer, which is well preserved. It shows little sign of damage or wear, and complements the rest of the dashboard’s black finish. The analogue gauges in the instrument cluster are clear and bright, with the speedometer accompanied by coolant temperature, oil pressure and fuel gauges, as well as a quartz analogue clock.
To the rear, the spacious boot is fitted with a full size spare wheel and an original jack. There is no carpeting present, but the boot floor appears to be in excellent condition

 The Exterior

  • Excellent red paintwork
  • Chrome trim in very good condition
  • Very clean underneath
Finished in a fetching shade of english red, this 250 looks very smart indeed. The classic Mercedes shape is a design of timeless elegance, with its tall headlamps and distinctive chrome radiator surround.
The paint looks to be in very good condition, with few defects to be seen. It exhibits a deep lustre and remains brightly coloured. Similarly, the bodywork is in good shape, with good shut lines and a smart appearance.
The chrome trim is in similarly excellent condition and the lamp lenses appear to be clear and bright. Underneath, the car is clean and tidy, with no discernible damage we could, and many of the components showing a good coat of underseal. The steel wheels are finished nicely in colour-matched chrome hubcaps and the tyres appear to retain good tread.

 The Mechanics

  • 2.8 litre straight-six engine
  • Automatic transmission
  • Engine bay in very clean condition
Lifting the large bonnet of this Mercedes reveals a cavernous engine bay which holds this car’s smooth-running straight-six engine. Slightly confusingly, although this is a 250 model, the engine is a 2.8-litre unit, in a departure from Mercedes-Benz’s usually rigorously logical naming system.
The engine bay is in superbly clean condition, with hardly any dirt to be found. There are no mechanical issues reported and we note that the car is showing a very low recorded mileage for its age.
These classic Mercedes have an almost unparalleled reputation for longevity and mechanical robustness, so this 250 should be able to give many more years of reliable service.

Summary

In all, this Mercedes 250 appears to be an extremely well presented example of this popular model. The W114 has a dedicated following, and we’re sure that the next owner of this 250 won’t be disappointed.
