The Appeal
DAF’s crisply styled 33 was a bright spark in the otherwise dreary world of small 70s family saloons. Its clever Variomatic CVT-style transmission took away the hassle of changing gears - just forward for forward, reverse for reverse - and presaged the current popularity of auto boxes.
This lovely Averto Green ‘74 car would certainly have stood out amongst the brown and beige Allegros. It would perform the same trick in a Tesco car park or classic car show today.
It is an impression aided by its great condition. We are told that the very low mileage of 12,280 miles amassed by its five keepers over 51 years is genuine. It’s a view supported by the bodywork and preserved tan vinyl interior.
The current keeper replaced the drive belts and diaphragm a couple of months ago. Although it is not a legal requirement, the car usefully carries a long MOT to February 2026 with no advisories. That gives great transparency for the buyer.
The DAF 33 is one of everyday motoring’s most unusual classics. This one looks very tempting.
The vendor writes:
“It is easy to drive, the gear select is "forward to go forward, back to go back!" Steering is light, and positive, brakes are very effective. It is a small but roomy four-seater and will keep up with modern traffic easily, and cruise at 50-60 on a motorway.”
