The Appeal
If it were a drink, it would be a double shot of espresso.
Regardless of age, rarity and value, few cars excite us so readily as a 105 Series Bertone Coupé. From its snarling twin-cam engine to its svelte Italianate lines, it’s the fun-size thoroughbred that never fails to put a smile on your face. It’s no wonder the likes of Alfaholics, Totem Automobili, and many more performance specialists use this particular Alfa Romeo as the basis for their builds.
This 1974 example was supplied new to the UK in right-hand drive, resplendent in this fetching hue of Pine Green. Some fifty years on, it remains in highly original order, even down to those factory-fit steel wheels with hubcaps, which appropriately, are still shod in period-correct Vredestein tyres. The Tabacco interior complements the paint perfectly and looks to be in superb order with very few signs of wear.
Reportedly driving well and ready to enjoy, this Alfa has everything going for it. We really would take one of these over most cars with three times the horsepower, and this one looks like a superlative example.

As much as red suits them, it’s nice to see an Alfa - or any Italian car for that matter - in a different colour. Pine Green is subtle, showing off those Giorgetto Giugiaro lines very well indeed. It also sits very well against that Tabacco vinyl interior. It’s a colour palette that never goes out of fashion.
As the photographs attest to, this GTV presents very well for its age, especially one that’s spent its life here in the UK where the roads are for the most part salty and potholed. The bodywork looks straight and sound all round, with even door gaps, sharp swage lines and well-fitting panels. We note a few small signs of wear to the paint; some slight deterioration around the C pillar badges for example, but certainly nothing especially noteworthy. We’re not informed of any known corrosion issues or any history of structural damage.
On the inside, all looks in very fine condition, especially the upholstery which looks hardly used. The original wood-rimmed steering wheel produced for Alfa Romeo by firms Personal and Hellebore looks in fine condition, as do the various veneers, the Jaeger instrumentation and the original switchgear. The carpets all present nicely, as does the headlining. We note that a replacement piece of pale carpet has been cut for the boot.
The Mechanics
- 2.0-litre all-alloy four-cylinder twin-cam by Giuseppe Busso
- Five-speed manual gearbox
- Limited-slip differential
- Superbly presented and very original engine bay
This little Alfa has been maintained by vintage Alfa Romeo Specialist in South-West London for the last 7 years and we understand that it has no known issues.
If “the proof in the pudding is in the eating”, then the test of a car’s mettle is surely how it performs out on the road. We’re assured that this little GTV is an utter joy to drive, with an eager, rev-happy engine and taut handling. All presents immensely well under the bonnet, retaining the original-type air filter and right-hand drive placement of the ancillaries. The clutch and brake master cylinders look to be relatively new items.
