1973 Volkswagen Beetle 1303S (RHD)

Highlights

  • ‘Big Beetle’ with more power and improved suspension
  • Original and practical four-seater starter classic
  • Ideal running project to use and improve
  • Looks smart with extra driving lights and alloys

The Appeal

Volkswagen’s continuous development of the ‘Beetle’ had, by 1973, produced a car that retained the classic shape but incorporated a host of modern improvements.  It was nicknamed the ‘Big Beetle’ and the 1303S version featured a pokey 1600cc engine, bigger boot and better handling thanks to updated suspension.
These models are easily identified by their wraparound windscreens and ‘elephant ears’ rear lights.
This is one of those desirable 1303S models and comes to us in original and usable condition.  It could be approached as a running project or simply used and enjoyed, just as the Beetle was always intended.

The History and Paperwork

  • 1973 1303S model with interior and exterior enhancements
  • These models got revised front end styling with bigger boots
  • Inside a restyled dashboard delivered a more modern and conventional layout
  • Unfortunately at the time of writing we do not have sight of the service or maintenance records

The Condition

  • Attractively finished in mid blue metallic neatly finished with eight spoke 15in alloys
  • Standard car with the addition of those alloys and a pair of auxiliary driving lights
  • Desirable period accessories such as the rear window louvre and black bonnet vent
  • Bodywork is presentable but shows deterioration up close in various photos
  • There are various areas around the car showing corrosion
  • These include the driver’s side rear wing, driver’s door and bonnet lip and rear edge
  • Alloys present well with light signs of wear up close
  • Chromework is presentable but shows light pitting and some corrosion
  • Auxiliary lights are both lightly cracked and slightly misted
  • Other glasswork presents well with no visible damage
  • Corrosion to chassis visible in various photographs
  • Structure otherwise shows surface rust that we advise checking in the photographs
  • Practical four seater with black vinyl seats
  • Front and rear seat trim is mismatched but well kept
  • Some deterioration to top of rear seat back to note
  • Revised 1303S dashboard is generally well kept with fillet of fake veneer a highlight
  • Good switchgear which appears complete and we have no reports of any issues
  • Dashboard presents well with only light scuffs to note
  • Blue carpets throughout cabin and in ‘frunk’, all in used but presentable condition
  • Original factory four spoke, leather-rimmed steering wheel
  • Wooden gear knob
  • Grab handles display a subtle nod to the colour scheme of Herbie
  • Original Volkswagen pedal rubbers
  • Door cards appear original and well kept with complete fittings in good condition
  • Driver’s door card displays some deterioration to rear edge
