1973 Triumph GT6 Mk 3

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Older restoration
  • Comprehensively restored in the 1990s
  • Stored for several years
  • Perfect basis to take to the next level

THE APPEAL

With its lean profile and sinewy curves, there’s no wonder that the Triumph GT6 is often referred to as the “poor man’s E-Type”, and it’s not a bad comparison.
Smaller and with a much smaller 2.0-litre engine, albeit still a six-cylinder, the GT6 is a strikingly curvaceous car and a proper British GT.

The Mk 3 model is particularly alluring, with the third-generation restyle adding a flatter rear end and wider arches, as well as meaty sports steel wheels. It looks the part!
This one is a great opportunity to buy a decent and sound GT6 and take it up a notch, as although it has been subject to a full restoration that was done 25 years ago, and it now has a few cosmetic niggles to sort out.

Nothing drastic or too alarming, making it an easy project to return to A1 condition. It has been stored as part of a private collection and has been off the road since 2008, but will be sold serviced and in good running order.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Partial history
  • Lots of bills and invoices from 1990s
  • UK V5C
  • Tax and MOT exempt
  • Photographs of original build

THE INTERIOR

  • Black velour and vinyl
  • Original wood dash
  • Three-spoke sports steering wheel

The cabin of the GT6 is in largely great condition, with vinyl seats and nylon velour inserts so typical of 1970s British Leyland. They’re in tidy order and need nothing more than a good clean. The same can be said of the carpets, headlining and door cards.
All of the dials and gauges work as they should and the wooden dash is sound enough, but with some signs of sun fading.
The boot area is in good order, but a new tailgate stay is required.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Restored 25 years ago
  • Now showing some signs of age
  • Original sports steel wheels
  • Solid front outriggers
Finished in its original colour of Ice Blue – a distinctive and appealing 1970s shade – the GT6 looks amazing from 10 paces.

Get closer and you’ll find a few areas for improvement. Some of the chrome is tired and pitted, and there are bubbles of rust manifesting under the paintwork, notably on the nearside front sill and both door bottoms.

There are also some bubbles on the body seam at the top of the offside rear wing.
It looks solid enough underneath, and the vulnerable front outriggers are solid having been welded at some point in the past. It’s a handsome car that’s perfectly usable as it is, but with some TLC could be brought up to the condition of a really lovely one.

THE MECHANICS

  • 1,998cc 6 cyl OHV
  • Four-speed with overdrive
  • Starts and runs sweetly
  • Good oil pressure
  • Recently rebuilt carburetors

Powered by the 2.0-litre straight six from the Triumph 2000, the GT6 is a smooth and beguiling performer, with ample acceleration and incredible refinement for a sports car, especially at cruising speeds with the overdrive engaged.
This one starts and runs well, holding good oil pressure and with no excessive smoke.

It has just been fettled back to life by a classic mechanic and is said to run and drive well, though a thorough check of all the braking and suspension components is recommended before using it in anger.

SUMMARY

Here’s a fabulous opportunity to take a sound and good GT6 and turn it into a truly great one.

It’s smart and well-presented as is, but has been stored for some time and would really benefit from a good going over, along with some minor cosmetic improvements.

Do that and you’ll have an absolute gem.

The potential here is huge.
