1973 Porsche 911 T 2.4 Targa

Vendor supplied the photos

Highlights

  • Subject to some restoration work in 2018 with the bodywork resprayed, interior retrimmed and engine partially rebuilt
  • More powerful 1972 2.4T engine fitted and upgraded with superior hydraulic chain tensioners and Zenith triple-body carburettors
  • Registered in Belgium since 2019 and passes the biennial safety inspection without any issues

The Appeal

Neither a coupé nor cabriolet, Porsche introduced their now legendary ‘Targa’ roof at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show in response to growing safety concerns around the structural integrity of a convertible in the event of an accident. It proved a popular option for those who enjoy open-top motoring without the drawbacks of a canvas roof and remains a fixture of the 911 range to this day.
Here we have a rather special 1973 example which has been subject to a great deal of work in recent years. It’s fitted with a 1972 2.4T engine, upgraded with superior hydraulic chain tensioners and Zenith triple-body carburettors. Its striking green paintwork was refinished in 2018 and at the same time, the interior was comprehensively overhauled. Registered in Belgium since 2019, the vendor informs us that the 911 has been very reliable during their ownership and it passes the biennial safety inspection without any issues.

The History and Paperwork

  • US-supplied example
  • Left-hand drive
  • The vendor acquired the car in the Netherlands
  • Now registered in Belgium
  • Passes the biennial Belgian safety inspection without any issues
  • Subject to extensive renovation work in 2018-19

The Condition

  • Striking green paintwork, refinished to a high standard
  • The seats were retrimmed in Nappa leather and the steering wheel has been recovered
  • New floor carpets fitted and luggage compartment lining fitted
  • Targa roof restored and in good order
  • Straight bodywork, free from notable blemishes or any signs of corrosion
  • Chromed Fuchs alloys in smart condition
  • Vredestein tyres fitted
Having undergone a great deal of work in recent years, this Porsche presents immensely well for its age. It’s immensely straight and the paintwork has evidently been refinished to a high standard. The same can be said for the interior which presents immensely well following the retrimming of the seats and steering wheel and the fitment of new carpeting. There’s very little in the way of wear and we understand everything to be in good working order except for the oil level gauge. All the chrome looks to be in good condition, as do black trims and the “Porsche” vinyls down the sides. The Targa roof was also restored and fits in place nicely.

The Mechanics

  • 2.4T air-cooled NA flat-six fitted
  • 915 five-speed manual gearbox
  • Valve stem oil seals and engine gaskets were all replaced in 2018
  • The brakes, including discs, pads, hoses, and master cylinder, were also renovated in 2018
  • Superior hydraulic chain tensioners and Zenith triple-body carburettors
There’s a reason that petrolheads love air-cooled 911s so much and it becomes abundantly clear what that is once you get behind the wheel. They’re brilliant to drive and their handling is quite unique thanks to the rear-engined configuration. We’re assured that this example drives very well indeed, with strong performance from its subtly upgraded 2.4T engine and smooth gear changes. We’re not informed of any faults and it reportedly covers great distances with ease.
