The Appeal
Developed to compete in the Group 4 GT class, the Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS was the fastest German production car built to date. Weighing in at under a ton, and endowed with over 200 bhp, the RS could achieve 60 mph in under six seconds - and that was in roadgoing trim! Unsurprisingly, these incredible numbers translated to immense success on the race track and that’s why the 2.7 Carrera RS is a legend among Porsche enthusiasts. Its innovative ‘duck tail’ spoiler, muscular haunches and prominent ‘Carrera’ vinyls are nothing short of iconic.
This 1973 2.7 RS evocation was built for competition during the 1990s. It was campaigned successfully for around ten years and maintained by the likes of Autofarm and Bob Watson. Motor racing is an expensive business and the vendor informs us that over £100,000 was spent on upkeep during this period. In 2005, the 2.7-litre flat-six was swapped out for a 3.0-litre 911 SC unit which it continues to run to this day. This affords the car even greater performance potential - making it something of a ‘sleeper’ even by Carrera RS standards.
The suspension has been softened (slightly) for on-road use, but the car retains its roll cage, harnesses and other competition accoutrement should you wish to return to the track. The vendor adds that “the driving experience is raw, unbridled 911” - so if that appeals to you as much as it does to us - be sure not to miss this excellent opportunity to make it yours.

The Condition
- Autofarm confirm the vehicle has been re-shelled into a G-series chassis, probably for corrosion purposes
- Complete respray in ‘Gulf Blue’ during the early 2000s
- The vendor also had the rear arches resprayed in 2014
- Period-correct Fuchs alloy wheels
- Exterior cut-off switches
- Fire extinguisher system and half-cage still fitted
- Momo Prototipo steering wheel
- Bucket seats and harnesses (6-point for driver and 4-point for passenger)
- Mixture of rubber and felt floor mats
- New headlining in 2005
Resplendent in the very apt shade of ‘Gulf Blue’, this 911 looks every bit the period-correct Carrera 2.7 RS. All the famous details are there and we particularly enjoy the French-market yellow headlamp tint which brings to mind Steve McQueen’s 1971 film ‘Le Mans’.
This car exhibits a charming patina consistent with having raced for a decade, but no excessive signs of deterioration, wear or damage that we could see. There is a very slight bubble on the sill on the nearside, but this has been professionally checked and is reportedly not a cause for concern. The bodywork is otherwise exemplary, with good panel alignment and door fit.
Inside, we find a cabin brimming with competition-ready features, but importantly, not overly paired back. This is to say it’s a perfectly civilised place to be on the road - even for longer journeys thanks to those exceedingly comfortable sports seats.
The Mechanics
- Race-tuned 3.0-litre SC flat-six fitted in 2005
- Bob Watson rebuilt five-speed manual gearbox
- Limited-slip differential
- Penske fully adjustable rear suspension
- Equipped with an additional oil cooler
Now harbouring a race-tuned 3.0-litre air-cooled NA flat-six, this 911 boasts some serious performance. It's achieved 140 mph on the German Autobahn and reportedly has handling to match its straight-line speed potential. All presents beautifully inside the engine compartment - a testament to a very tidy installation.
As a former competition car, the adjustable suspension has been slightly softened for road use. The vendor comments:
“the car is light, quick, raw and handles impeccably - perfect for someone who wants to feel 100% connected to the road”.
Autofarm have carried out a thorough inspection and service in readiness for sale and the MOT is advisory-free, running until July 2025. In short, this very fit 911 is ready to use.
