Highlights
- Equipped with rare period ‘stand heater’ for cold climates
- Offered in very good condition for its age
- Original Wankel engine reportedly running well
The Appeal
You can’t fault NSU on its ambition. The RO80 could have been just another conventional four-door saloon, and it likely would have sold well off the back of the firm’s reputation for well-engineered cars.
The RO80 was anything but another conventional four-door saloon. With aerodynamic styling by Claus Luthe, a twin-rotor Wankel engine driving the front wheels and a three-speed manual gearbox with an automated clutch, it was quite unlike anything any other manufacturer has made before or since.
Issues with premature engine rotor wear meant the RO80’s time in the spotlight was cut tragically short, but that doesn’t take away from the fact it was an engineering marvel.
This 1973 example looks to be in very good condition for its age and the vendor confirms that it’s a fine example. We’re informed that it drives very well, so if you’re looking to experience this most unusual of ‘70s executive saloons, this would be an excellent choice.
