The Appeal
There are four numbers that widen the eyes and hearts of just about any Mini enthusiast. Four all important numbers that turn a standard classic mini into something truly special. Those numbers. 1275. Lightweight, dynamic and punchy, of course all words that can be used to describe the regular car, but the 1275 Clubman Minis do a rather marvellous job of taking all those wonderful qualities and turning them right the way up to 11.
A genuine Morris GT Clubman, this 1973 model has been restored for daily use by an avid Mini enthusiast and presents incredibly well. In a glorious blue over gold specification, this is a car that lends itself perfectly to continued regular use as a quirky daily driver or to a more refined preservation as a weekend car or as part of a private collection.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered 09/10/1973
- Genuine Morris 1275 GT as denoted by the accompanying registration document
- Acquired by an avid Mini enthusiast who has typically restored 2-3 Minis per year for the last decade
- This car was then restored by them to be used as a daily driver which it was for some time
- Both tax and MOT exempt due to the vehicle’s historic status
- Despite its exemption the Mini has been tested and is accompanied by both current and previous MOT certificates with the current MOT valid with no advisories until January 2024
- Dry stored under current ownership
The Interior
- Nicely presented Clubman interior, in largely original form
- Exhibited with a gentle patina in places as this has been a daily driven car
- Blue leather seating front and rear in good form, with just some small blemishes, predominantly to the driver and front passenger seats
- 3 spoke Clubman steering wheel with Clubman branded centre
- Neat and simple black door panels with good quality door furniture and trim
- Well fitting contrasting light coloured headliner, exhibiting some staining but presentable nonetheless
- Central mounted switchgear is in good clean shape and understood to be working
- Pop out rear windows
- Plush black carpeting throughout
- Clean and simple carpeted rear boot area with removable panel to expose the spare wheel and battery
- This is a great example of a good honest original clubman interior, with a general patina from regular, yet careful use
The Exterior
- Iconic classic Clubman styling
- Finished in highly desirable metallic blue and gold spec
- Paintwork is of a great standard, the dark blue has something of a mile deep quality to it
- Gold 1275 GT side graphics are a wonderful addition to the car’s aesthetics
- Excellent chrome trim used throughout, including the front and rear bumpers and square side mirrors
- Iconic 1275 front grille and headlight setup, immediately distinguishable from a standard Mini
- As we understand the car was re-shelled circa 1985 and changed from yellow to blue
- Well presented with a subtle level of patina in places that one would expected from a daily used vehicle
- Glass work is all of a good high standard
- Panel gaps appear consistent and straight throughout
- Eight spoke 13” alloy wheels sit at all four corners, in good condition with contrasting black centres
- A spare steel wheel resides in the boot of the car
The Mechanics
- Genuine factory Clubman with 1275cc engine nestled under the bonnet
- In great overall mechanical order
- As we understand this example has been lightly tuned by the previous owner during the aforementioned rebuild process
- With more punch than a standard Mini of the era, this is seen as the one to go for if you are intent on more regular use
- Underside appears clean and solid with any areas of corrosion found during the rebuild reported to have been rectified at the time
- Backed by a wealth of enthusiast and parts support
- New sub frame understood to have been fitted along with one outer sill panel
- Fires into life comfortably and provides the excellent driving experience one can only get from a classic Mini
Summary
Wonderful spec, great mechanical order, perfect for daily use. One struggles to think of what more could be asked of this Mini.
An entirely well presented genuine 1275 GT this 1973 Clubman will make a welcome addition to any collection or to take pride of place on the driveway as a quirky daily driver that bucks the trend and stands out from the bulk of mundane modern traffic.
