1973 Jensen Interceptor Mk III

Highlights

  • Previously restored, with photographic record
  • Nice original interior
  • A few jobs left to improve

The Appeal

A textbook example of a grand tourer, the Jensen Interceptor has always had a loyal following. It is instantly recognisable by its long bonnet and wrap around rear windscreen, the body being styled by Italian firm Carrozzeria Touring.
This particular Interceptor is said to have been restored during the 1990s and its current owners have carried out significant recommissioning to the interior, electrical system, power steering and fuel system.
It now appears to be a very good example, with room for improvement should the next owner desire a project.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 3rd September 1973
  • Extensive history file
  • Invoices for parts and servicing running to tens of thousands of pounds
  • Servicing by Cropredy Bridge Cars Ltd - a well known Jensen specialist
  • Restored by previous owner in 1980s, with photographic records
  • Road Tax and MOT exempt
  • The vendor assumes that a new speedometer has been fitted, so the total mileage is unknown

The Interior

  • Leather seats gently patinated
  • Said to be the original interior
  • Headlining particularly clean
The sumptuous leather interior exudes elegance and quality, with almost every surface being finished in quality black hide.

The deep cushioned seats are supportive and have gained the subtle patina of use over the years. There are signs of wear in places but we think this adds to the car’s story.
In front of the driver, a fully stocked dashboard provides a reassuring amount of information as to the state of the engine. The vendor reports that the air conditioning system is currently disconnected and that an aux input has been added to the original radio. The car includes the original 8 track Jensen radio which has been upgraded to include an auxiliary input for more modern music sources!
In all, this appears to be a very original interior, which is in good condition and has built up a pleasing patina over the decades.

The next owner may wish to carry out subtle improvements but it seems to be useable in its current state.

The Exterior

  • Bold styling — wrap around rear windscreen and vinyl roof
  • Paintwork in generally good condition
With its unmistakable styling, the Jensen Interceptor is a truly iconic vehicle. This particular Interceptor will not fail to be noticed wherever it goes, with its white paintwork and black vinyl roof.
The paint appears to be in presentable condition, with a few minor scuffs reported near the boot lid and a small gap in the pinstripe. Near both rear wheel arches there are some signs of paint bubbling, but otherwise the body appears to be presentable.
Underneath, the vendor reports that some welding has been carried out previously. There is now the usual surface corrosion present but no further issues are reported. The spare wheel is present, mounted on the underside, to the rear of the car. Whilst the drivers door mirror is broken, a fully matching exact period replacement has been sourced and is included with the car.
The alloy wheels look to be in sound condition, if a little dull, and the tyres are said to retain good tread.

The Mechanics

  • 7.2 litre V8 engine
  • Refurbished brakes
  • Fuel system and power steering refurbished
  • The car has recently been fully rewired with a brand new bespoke wiring loom, including a full, modernised fuse box tastefully disguised as the correct period item (includes a full mapping of the new fuse set up)
With its huge 7.2 litre V8 engine, the Interceptor packs enough punch to be a serious contender against any of its rivals.

This particular car is said to start and drive as it should, with the vendor noting that a press of the accelerator is required to prime the fuel system.
The seller informs us that they have had the brakes refurbished as well as the fuel system and power steering. There are invoices on file for many parts and photographs of the car’s restoration during the 1980s.

We understand that there is a leak from the exhaust manifold gasket, which will require attention.
In all, this is a good basis as a car to improve upon.

Summary

The ever-popular Jensen Interceptor is a fixture in the British classic car scene. Its powerful V8 engine and unmistakable styling have ensured that it remains a perennial favourite.
The car offered for sale here has been the subject of an older restoration and recent mechanical attention.

It now requires a little fettling in order to be enjoyed fully. Alternatively, it would be a very good starting point for a thorough restoration project.
