1973 Jensen Healey MK1

Highlights

  • Great condition
  • Recent restoration
  • Mot and tax exempt

The Appeal

The Jensen Healey is a stunning looking British motorcar that proved popular in the United States and was made in relatively few numbers, certainly by the ever-popular MGB standards. Born out of a collaboration between Donald Healey and the West Bromwich based Jensen Motors, it featured Lotus’s 2-litre 16-valve twin-cam under the bonnet, producing 144bhp and a top speed of 119mph, propelling it from 0-60 in 7.8 seconds.
This well-presented Mark 1 was restored around 2017, shortly before the current owner purchased it. Unfortunately, as the car was a bereavement sale, there is very little documentation that specifically relates to the restoration, so the vendor believes it was carried out by an enthusiast, and to a fine standard we might add. The car looks great inside and out and with a few small improvements will be excellent shape. As much as he would like to keep the car, loss of storage space forces sale.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1973
  • V5c present
  • Stack of MOT certificates, receipts and invoices for work carried out over the years
  • Purchased by the current owner in 2020 and has been used sparingly to go to the occasional show in the summer months
  • Always garaged in current ownership
  • Historic vehicle
  • Heritage certificate
  • MOT and Tax exempt
  • Original owner’s handbook and two workshop manuals
  • Good history with large file of invoices and receipts
  • 2 keys
  • Spare wheel, jack and partial tool kit

The Interior

  • Original black interior in good condition throughout with a nice aged patina which it wears well
  • No rips, tears or marks on the vinyl seats
  • Small crack in centre console behind handbrake
  • Trim all in good condition
  • The car has been in regular use so would benefit from a thorough clean
  • Vendor advises the door seals need replacing as the existing ones are worn
  • One of the sun visors has seen better days and would benefit from a replacement
  • All gauges and electrics work
  • Philips radio / cassette player in full working order
  • Roof in good condition but a there is a small tear where the logo has been imprinted on the rear window
  • Door cards present well, small tear by handle on passenger side
  • Carpets with original Jensen Healey overmats

The Exterior

  • Resprayed in its original yellow colour
  • Overall it presents exceptionally well but could do with addressing a few small areas
  • Small patch of bad repair at the leading edge of the bonnet (pictured but only noticeable on close inspection)
  • Few scratches to front nearside wing and a couple of paint chips upfront
  • Small very light dent in the nearside rear wing – this should be easily repairable as there appears to be no paint damage
  • The car did have bullet mirrors fitted on the wings which the vendor wasn’t a fan of so removed them, leaving two 5mm holes on each wing which are currently filled with grommets. While this doesn’t look too bad, the next owner may wish to fill and spray
  • New hood prior to vendors purchase in good condition apart from small tear mentioned above
  • Four good tyres with plenty of tread
  • Original wheels have the odd small mark but will come up nicely with a clean
  • Lights all work and are free from any cracks or damage

The Mechanics

  • 1,973cc petrol engine
  • 4-speed manual gearbox
  • Refurbished carburettors
  • Clean engine bay
  • All electrics reported to function correctly
  • The vendor advises that the car is in excellent mechanical shape
  • The engine runs extremely well, pulls well with no smoke and holds good oil pressure
  • Drivetrain works with no nasty noises
  • Steering and brakes work as they should and the suspension is quite agreeable

The Summary

A nicely restored Jensen Healy that are becoming increasingly rare and sought after. In original condition, the car presents really well and with a few small adjustments will bring it up to an excellent standard. This could be a perfect car to make a start in building a collection or would equally suit someone that wants to enjoy open top motoring with a hearty measure of style thrown in.
