The Appeal

When you think of great road-trips, you immediately think of America. And when you combine ‘road trip’ and ‘America’, the obvious solution is: Mustang.
A legend the world over, the first generation of the pony car saw many iterations and tweaks over its years in production, but here we have a very late first generation convertible. In fact, after this, there were no more convertible Mustangs until the early 80s.
Presented in a great colour scheme of light blue over dark blue vinyl, with a complementary white fabric roof and handsome ‘Torq Thrust’ wheels, we think this convertible is sure to prove a delight for whoever becomes its next custodian.

The History and Paperwork

  • 1973 model year car
  • Late first generation Mustang
  • 18,678 miles indicated (five figure odometer)
  • US title documents
  • EU import documentation present and correct
  • Two sets of keys included

The Interior

  • Dark blue vinyl upholstery with fabric centre inserts to the seats
  • Overall the upholstery looks to be in good order, although there are some signs of light wear and the driver’s seat looks to have been repaired in a few places
  • Grey carpets throughout the cabin area present well, with no obvious issues
  • The wood veneer panels on the door cards look to be undamaged, with no cracking we could see
  • Modern Kenwood CD/radio installed
  • A bank of three additional gauges has been fitted in the top centre of the dashboard
  • In general, the switchgear, instruments and driving controls look well, with some natural patination from use

The Exterior

  • The powered roof, finished in white fabric, looks to be in fine condition, with no damage, tears or notable sagging we could identify
  • Light Blue (3B) paintwork suits the vehicle well, showing off the lines and haunches nicely
  • There are some minor blemishes, chips and some cracking to the paint on the corners of the front urethane bumper, but nothing that would overly concern us
  • The body panels all appear to be in good order, with no corrosion or damage apparent and panel gaps that have a factory appearance
  • American Racing ‘Torq Thrust’ wheels, finished with grey centres and polished barrels/lips, that show in excellent condition
  • The wheels are fitted with a matched set of BFGoodrich tyres that look to be in fine fettle
  • Underneath, the car appears solid and clean, with no obvious corrosion or damage and a neat layer of underseal

The Mechanics

  • 4.1-litre (250ci) ‘Thriftpower’ inline-six
  • Three-speed automatic transmission
  • Factory fitted power brakes and power steering
  • Under the bonnet, the engine displays nicely, the bay being clean and tidy, with no apparent signs of leaks or overheating

Summary

There’s an evocative spirit to the Mustang that has stuck with the brand through good times and bad. It’s one of those cars that makes you smile just by thinking about it.
With a delightful colour scheme, this first generation Mustang is sure to draw admiring glances wherever it goes. Whether they plan to use the car as it is, or give it a light tidy up, we’re confident that the next owner will be acquiring something very fine indeed.
