1973 Ford F250

Highlights

  • South African production model, believed to benefit from a much drier climate
  • Powered by an almighty 351 Cleveland V8, with plenty of torque to enjoy
  • Recently imported to the United Kingdom, with all registration and import fees covered by the current, and only UK keeper
  • Presented in great condition for its age, with a delightful patina and plenty of characterful charm

The Appeal

Arguably the most iconic series of pick-up trucks to grace the roads, Ford’s F-Series has become synonymous with the marque’s success, spanning over a whopping 14 generations. This very F250 belongs to the sixth generation, known for drastically modernizing the platform, with an array of tasty improvements. These include the use of galvanized steel in their construction, disc brakes on the front, larger cabin dimensions, double-walled beds, and more.
Quite a shining example of Ford’s success with the F-Series, this particular truck was produced in the Republic of South Africa, for the local market. As a result, it seems rather likely that the vehicle has experienced somewhat ideal weather conditions in comparison to European roads, potentially seeing far less salt and corrosion.
In addition to its desirable origins, this F250 has certainly stood the test of time and proudly offers good mechanical health, and a patina-adorned, yet very respectable finish. As a rather rare vehicle in this region, this 1973 Ford F250 presents a very attractive opportunity indeed, offering the chance to secure a well-preserved American icon at considerably impressive value.

Whether you’re on the search for a light restoration project, a quirky workhorse or simply seek a freedom-inspiring weekend toy, this mighty F250 is ready to roll.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally produced for the Republic of South Africa market
  • Imported to the UK in October 2021, with NOVA & registration covered
  • First registered in the UK on the 1st of November, 2021
  • Comes ready to enjoy, with MOT until the 19th of January 2024
  • Includes the RSA registration certificate, import and registration documents, and correspondence from a local specialist regarding the incorrect displacement information currently within the V5C document. The current keeper has informed the DVLA of the correct displacement, and a new V5C is due to arrive imminently
  • It should be noted that although the vehicle passed its first MOT with flying colours and performs well, the current keeper recommends arranging transportation for longer distance travel upon purchase

The Interior

  • A delightfully minimal and retro interior, adorned with a few tasty upgrades
  • Features a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, Pioneer single DIN head unit, aftermarket instruments, and an extended shifter with a skull shift knob
  • Having likely been retrimmed in recent years, the seats offer clean and tidy finishes, with excellent comfort levels
  • Although a good dash of TLC may be in order, the interior of this F250 presents itself very well for the vehicle’s age, with plenty of characterful patina to enjoy

The Exterior

  • Beautifully bold design, with retro steel bumpers and an iconic front grille, further accented by a set of side steps, rear roll bar, and a set of forward-facing spotlights
  • Finished in white, offering quite a respectable finish for the age of the vehicle, with a few blemishes to note, including remnants of previous decals, and slight ageing as pictured
  • Comes equipped with a set of 15” steel wheels, wrapped in a set of Sunny tyres, with plenty of tread to enjoy
  • Overall, this quirky pick-up offers a very usable finish, with a light patina to show, and the occasional blemish. The truck would of course benefit from either restoration work, or simply a light dash of TLC, although the current finish is perfectly ready to handle whatever you throw at it

The Mechanics

  • Powered by a 5766cc (351 cubic inches) Cleveland V8, paired with a Holley carb, and manual transmission
  • Fires up with a turn of the key, and performs exactly as it should, with no known issues with the exception of a slightly weak handbrake, and a non-operational speedometer/odometer
  • Produces a fantastic V8 soundtrack, turning heads wherever it ventures
  • Recently serviced, with its fair share of fettling and mechanical refreshment
  • Comes ready to enjoy, with advisory-free MOT until the 19th of January 2024

Summary

The F250 continually receives praise across the globe, and now stands as a brilliant example of one of Ford’s greatest creations to date. Despite its age, this South African pick-up still has plenty to offer, including a rowdy V8, enough bed space for a small apartment complex, a well-preserved finish, and a near-unrivalled road presence.

Now presented with MOT until 2024 and just one UK owner, this 1973 Ford F250 is sure to instil a wild grin on the face of the lucky new keeper.
