Highlights
- Desirable hatchback ‘Touring’ variant
- Italian supplied example, retaining much of its original paperwork
- In great condition inside, out and underneath
The Appeal
The 2002 remains amongst the most sought after classic BMWs. Revered for their sporting success, they proved that BMW could produce capable small sports coupés, paving the way for the incredibly successful 3 Series that would follow. Amongst the most desirable variants of the 2002 is the Touring, and we’re delighted to offer this delightful 1973 Tii.
Supplied new to Italy, this 2002 retains much of its original paperwork and is presented in very good mechanical and cosmetic order. Excelling in the looks and handling departments this is a scintillating little ‘70s hatchback and the vendor remarks that this handsome example drives particularly well.
The History and Paperwork
- Italian registration documentation present
- The original maintenance and service manuals are present and in good condition
- Collection of historic service stamps
- Supplied to Italy from new
- 44,628 kilometres displayed - although we’re unable to verify whether this is correct
The Interior
- Black vinyl upholstery with beige velour inserts
- Appears very original and in a nice state of preservation
- Relatively little in the way of wear or damage
Climb aboard this BMW and you’re immediately ensconced in a ‘70s time capsule. There’s none of the modern world’s trappings to preoccupy you and the period Blaupunkt stereo is a far cry from today’s multifaceted infotainment systems.
The upholstery looks to be very smart for the car’s age, with nothing more than a little gentle wear to report, with no excessive abrasions, creases or indeed any damage that we could see. The seats remain supportive and comfortable and the door cards look to be in fantastic condition.
The carpets show their age a little more, with some wear and discolouration - although they remain eminently serviceable. Inside the boot, the carpet has some stains, but we couldn’t see any cracks in the dashboard and all the instrumentation looks great. All the switchgear appears original, with not a thing appearing out of place.
The Exterior
- Desirable ‘Touring’ bodystyle
- Attractive blue paintwork
- Seemingly in lovely condition topside and underneath
The vendor comments that this BMW is in excellent overall condition for its age and we perceive that it is indeed a very bright and handsome example. The paintwork looks immensely smart as do the various trims which are finished in chrome. There are few blemishes and certainly nothing that’s especially noticeable.
The bodywork appears nice and straight too, with no clear signs of rippling down the sides and the panel gaps seem to be quite uniform from what we could see. A glance underneath suggests all to be in fine shape, with no obvious corrosion and the vendor assures us that it is all very sound.
Amongst our favourite features are those quintessentially ‘70s alloy wheels. They really look the part and we couldn’t see any damage besides the lightest of superficial blemishes. There’s also a spare which can be found in the boot.
The Mechanics
- 1990cc four-cylinder engine with mechanical fuel injection
- Five-speed manual gearbox
- Apparently driving well with no faults to report
This 2002 looks to be really smart under the bonnet and the vendor informs us that it’s in great mechanical order. We’re informed that it drives impeccably, retaining the nimble handling and brisk performance these BMWs are renowned for.
The five-speed gearbox reportedly continues to select gears smoothly and the brakes are said to bring the car to a stop in a timely fashion.
Summary
This looks a very good example of the much admired 2002 BMW. Few appear so original and, with the vendor telling us that it drives as great as it looks, we’re exceedingly envious of its next lucky owner.
