The Appeal
Considering BMW’s reputation as the ‘ultimate driving machine’ it is surprising to learn that the high performance 2002 came about by accident. A couple of the firm’s senior bods had ‘hot rodded’ their own cars with the firm’s 2litre engine and a great idea was born.
The 2002Tii added fuel injected to up power to a heady 130bhp, turning the light, lithe 02 into a proper sports car. Later cars got facelifted square rear lights but early cars had the classic sought-after round versions.
This stunning 2002Tii is as close to a brand new example as it is surely possible to get. It has been subject to a 25,000Euro restoration, but when you discover that was in 2011 you realise just how meticulously it has been cared for.
For enthusiasts of these impeccable sports cars this is a chance to get your hands on a concours quality car with the right colour combination and specification.

After arriving in Ireland, the 2002 Tii was sent to the Classic Car Workshop in Limerick, with the brief for a total nut-and-bolt restoration. The BMW was completely disassembled, and the shell was stripped back to bare metal to assess the repairs required.
Corrosion to the front and rear of the sills and floor pan was cut away and replaced with new metal, and a whole genuine new front end and two new doors were also fitted. All vulnerable seams and areas on the underside were coated with epoxy mastic, before the car was primed and rubbed down for the colour coat, and the striking final coats of metallic Taiga Green.
As can be appreciated in the photo gallery, the upholstery remains in excellent condition, with no damage as you would expect. A three-spoke steering wheel and wood gear knob are also in place, and new carpets and floor mats were fitted throughout. All of the buttons and switches work as they should, and there are no known electrical faults.
As it is exempt from mandatory testing in Ireland, the car's last official roadworthiness check was an MOT test in the UK on 3 April 2009 at 65,889 miles, which it passed at the first attempt with no advisories whatsoever. The car remains in excellent overall mechanical condition today, having been driven sparingly since the restoration. All four Alpina BMW wheels are fitted with Vredestein Sprint T80 tyres, which are in as-new condition

Wherever you look around this car it oozes quality and if you are looking for the very best, this car must surely be a contender.
The Mechanics
- M10 1,990cc 130bhp 4cyl BMW engine with mechanical ‘Kugelfisher’ fuel injection
- 4spd manual gearbox
- Suspension fully replaced or refreshed during restoration including powder coating
- Front and rear subframes replaced during work
- New steering linkages and Sachs shock absorbers
- Engine internals left untouched due to low mileage and good running
- All ancillaries replaced including water pump, hoses, thermostat, electrics and timing
Any 02 is a joy to drive but the chassis fundamentals always demanded more power. For those who couldn’t stretch to a Turbo, the 2002Tii was the perfect real world performance alternative. Its 130bhp was more than ample for a light car in the early 70s.
This car has received a comprehensive mechanical overhaul that is obvious from the photos. Only the engine internals have been left untouched because on such a low mileage car it wasn’t necessary. All the suspension and ancillaries have been overhauled, delivering a car that drives and performs – and is likely to be as reliable – as any buyer would wish.
