1972 Triumph TR6

Highlights

  • Completely rebuilt in recent years
  • Brilliant British drop top sports car
  • One of very few left-hand drive fuel injected models with overdrive
  • Rare 150hp model

The Appeal

The Triumph TR6 is often considered the ultimate British sports car of the 1970’s thanks to adorable looks, a capable chassis and a tuneful straight six engine.
This 1972 model benefits from that year’s addition of fuel injection throwing away the aged carburettor solution. In the past few years, it has received plenty of attention following a full rebuild from the chassis up. The preceded a lengthy interior trim revamp and the car’s engine has recently been tinkered with as well.
This is already one of very few remaining left-hand drive examples with both fuel injection and overdrive, clocking in at an impressive 150hp compared to its more common 125hp buildmates. As a result, it's a rare sight - especially in this condition.

History and Paperwork

  • Original left-hand drive car registered in Spain in 1972
  • Odometer reads 19,319 miles
  • Rebuilt from the chassis up by the previous owner
  • Purchased by the current owner in March 2020
  • Interior has been revamped under its current ownership
  • Spanish registration paperwork looks to be in order

The Interior

  • Interior trim refurbished over the last two years
  • Cream leather upholstery
  • Wood trim throughout

In 2020, the current owner purchased this 1972 Triumph TR6 and went about restoring the interior. Originally featuring black interior trim according to the commission number plate, it is now decorated in a light cream colour.
This immaculate leather adorns the seats, door cards, centre console and handbrake boot. It is paired with wood trim that covers much of the rest of the cabin. The dashboard, steering wheel and gear knob all feature the sparkling accent. Finally, the original black colour features on the dashboard top as a reminder of the car’s roots.
Thanks to the revamp, the cabin looks very much in great condition. From the cream leather to the wood and even the carpets, everything looks in place and clean. Even the TR6-branded kick plates look to shine as one could only hope. Furthermore, the current owner tells us that all the buttons and controls inside work as they should.

The Exterior

  • Rebuilt from the chassis up by the previous owner
  • New wire wheels
  • In immaculate condition according to the owner

Under its previous ownership, this TR6 was completely rebuilt from the chassis. As a result, it currently sits in seemingly immaculate condition from the body panels to the paintwork and underside.
The entire car has been painted in a wonderful dark blue colour that brilliantly compliments its curves. This pairs nicely with the many chrome pieces that shine well such as the bumpers, badges, grille and brand-new wire wheels. In fact, the four rims were recently fitted by the current owner and look to be in fantastic condition.
Currently in Marbella Spain, the soft top seemingly gets very little use under the hot sun. In fact, the fabric roof is showing some creasing in places showing that it has been resting in one position for a while. On the plus side, this does mean that it is very clean overall.

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre inline-six engine, 150hp
  • Fuel injection and overdrive
  • Starts well according to the owner

Under the bonnet, within a fabulously tidy engine bay sits the 2.5-litre straight six that powers this British sports car. From the factory, it is capable of around 150hp, plenty to have fun with in such a lightweight model.
As a 1972 model, it is one of the first TR6 cars to feature fuel injection rather than carburettors and, as one will notice from the rear badge, its four-speed manual transmission comes with overdrive. An up to date take on the British sports car philosophy is certainly an attractive proposal in the eyes of many a motoring enthusiast.
The current owner informs us that the car starts and runs well. This is surely in no small part thanks to the fitting of new injectors, spark plugs and metering unit.

Summary

Following a full rebuild, interior revamp and some mechanical attention, this 1972 Triumph TR6 is surely one of the best left-hand drive fuel injected examples, especially with a four-speed overdrive transmission.
