The Appeal

The TR6 was produced from 1968 to 1976 with the majority of the cars produced destined for overseas markets, mainly America.

Of the 91,850 produced only 8,370 were sold in the UK which means that finding a genuine UK spec car today is not only difficult but also costly.
All cars prior to November 28th 1968 were twin carburettor cars with all those afterwards having petrol injection fuel systems. This car is an ‘Early’ specification model being produced before 1973 which means the commission numbers denote a CC prefix VIN number as opposed to the later CF/CR ones.

As an American import, the UK owners have commissioned a huge amount of work to get this TR6 back to its best, representing an homage to the best bits of the TR6 production run.

It’s a well-cared for and seemingly sorted car that will surely bring plenty of joy to its next owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • Huge amount of restoration work carried out by ‘Classic Cars Cardiff’
  • Fuel injection to twin carb conversion
  • Clutch replacement
  • Welding completed to rear of the car
  • Brake system overhauled
  • Engine rebuild in 2013 @ 87,741 miles
  • Suspension overhauled
  • New wiring loom
  • Centre console retrimmed with new speakers and stereo
The Triumph has had a huge amount of work completed since it was imported from America, with the rear arches and floors repaired due to corrosion and an incorrectly installed roll bar.

The paperwork file is bursting with invoices and work summaries from the conversions completed to get the car running in the UK such as the twin carb conversion, the unleaded petrol conversion and lots of other localised repairs, upgrades, and overhauls.

The Interior

  • Retrimmed centre console with new speakers and stereo
  • Upholstery and carpets in good condition
  • All electrics working at the time of shoot
  • Good fitting roof in good condition
The interior of the TR6 was very well presented with the upholstery and carpets being in great condition with no rips, tears or fading.

The walnut dash is in good condition with just a small amount of lacquer peel in the top left-hand corner. The steering wheel and gear lever have little wear and the centre console has been retrimmed.

The Exterior

  • Paint work is in good condition with just a few small areas having an expected level of wear
  • Body has had a cut and polish to bring the paintwork back to life
  • Wheels are in fantastic condition with little to no curbing or damage
  • Panel gaps are tight and consistent all around the car
  • Convertible hood is a good fit and in good condition
  • Chrome is in good condition; it has a little pitting, but it is below the time expected wear
  • New metal is stone chipped, and the body is believed to have been rust proofed
The TR6 is a very handsome car and is straight and believed to be rust free after having some metal work completed since being in the UK.

The paint has been cut and polished bringing back its shine and depth. All electrics were reported to be working at the time of the photoshoot and the chrome was in good overall condition.

The convertible roof was a good fit and in good condition, it also came with a tonneau cover and a cabin cover which were both in good condition, only the cabin cover had a small rip which could be sewed up.

The Mechanics

  • Fuel injection to twin carburettor conversion
  • Unleaded petrol upgrade
  • Engine rebuild in 2013 @ 87,741 miles
  • Fuel system swapped for carburettors
The car had sat for a while when we arrived for the photoshoot, the owner jumped in and the Triumph started on the button and idled smoothly.

The drive down the road was met with no unwanted noises or difficulties (apart from the lack of power steering!) and the induction noise from those twin carbs sounded fantastic.

The car sat and idled beautifully whilst it warmed up to temp. We switched it off for the photos then it dutifully made its way back up the road with no complaints.

The engine has been stripped to its components and refreshed with anything that needed changing along with the owner’s specified conversions.

It has resulted in a tribute to the early UK cars and a good execution at that, for any specifics on the mechanicals please feel free to contact the shop that completed the work as we’re sure they’d be happy to fill in any blanks we have left out.

Summary

This is a lovely example of an early 70’s Triumph and even though it’s an American import it has an impressive history file with all the paperwork kept by this current owner.

The owner is selling as it just doesn’t get used as much as it should.

That is precisely the appeal of this car though, it is one you can get in and use every day if you felt like it, with the added addition of some modifications to retain all the nostalgia from the early UK spec cars.
