1972 Triumph TR6

Highlights

  • Full respray done since 2021
  • Recently mechanically overhauled
  • Brilliant condition British sports car

The Appeal

Akin to models like the MGB and Austin-Healey 3000, the Triumph TR6 is a model perfectly representation the philosophy of a British sports car. It’s all about top-down motoring in style with lightness and simplicity the best words to describe the driving experience.
This particular model has done quite some travelling in its time have first sold in Canada and later being imported to France. Indeed, it arrived on French soil in 2021 and was largely restored not long after. Today, it presents beautifully in its uncommon black coat of paint complemented by an elegant soft top.
Mechanically, this model is nothing if not healthy following extensive overhauling work since arriving in France. Indeed, the owner mentions that this car suffers from no apparent faults and drives very well.

The History and Paperwork

  • First manufactured in 1972
  • Original registered in Canada
  • French classic car registration since 2021
  • Purchased by the current owner in 2022
  • Full respray completed in the past two years
  • Lots of restoration work done since arriving in France
  • Many invoices from restoration
  • Government technical inspection until February 2024

The Interior

  • Original interior upholstery
  • Very good condition throughout
  • Open-air driving at its best
Black leather and wood trim are certainly a trend in the cabin of this 1972 Triumph TR6. In fact, the car is reportedly still wearing its original interior frock of leather seat and door card upholstery with wood trim across the dashboard. Making for a very pleasant place to be, it is sure to also contribute to the fantastic driving experience.
In fact, the small diameter wood-rimmed steering wheel and Union Jack embossed gear knob are seemingly perfectly place. Furthermore, bucket-like seats appear to hold the driver and passenger firmly in their place, even during spirited driving.
Several dials and controls decorate the dashboard and we have no reason to believe that anything is faulty or non-functional.
Open the boot and, much like the cabin, one will spot a nicely upholstered compartment with enough space for a weekend’s worth of luggage. Under the floor is the spare wheel and toolkit as one would expect.

The Exterior

  • Very handsome British sports car
  • Fully resprayed since arriving in France
Finished in a relatively recent coat of black paint, this 1972 Triumph TR6 gives off an aggressive persona, unlike most examples one will spot on the open road. Indeed, it has been fully resprayed since arriving on French soil meaning it presents in a fantastic condition.
Whilst looking great with the roof down, the fabric soft top looks to be in equally good shape meaning the car presents wonderfully. The vendor informs us that the roof goes up and down without issue.
Red pinstriping and many fixtures make for the perfect details on this adorable little model whilst the chrome luggage rack provides additional practicality for autumnal weekends away.
Bar the odd minute scuff mark, the allow wheels are in seemingly good shape and very presentable. They are fitted with a set of Pirelli P4 tyres that the owner describes as having ‘lots of tread’.
Underneath, the car does look to be fairly free of rust. Indeed, the chassis appears clean thanks to restored front and rear axles and subframes. One can spot the stainless steel exhaust shining seductively from below.

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre straight-six, 150hp
  • Drives very well, without issue
  • Lots of work done since 2021
Under the bonnet sits the 2.5-litre straight-six that provides each and every TR6 with around 150hp. However, this particular unit has recently been overhauled during a fairly large restoration process. In fact, the car features new spark plugs, belts, filters and hoses. Furthermore, the carburettors were cleaned as recently as September 2021.
As one would expect from a car having been through such a recent reconditioning, the owner points out how well it drives. Indeed, it accelerates as it should and starts easily. Furthermore, the stainless steel exhaust means the straight-six sings a particularly pleasant song.
Elsewhere, everything from the suspension to the braking system and the aforementioned axles have all been restored or replaced. The car therefore should perform much like Triumph intended, a sporty drop-top missile.

Summary

A gorgeous car inside and out, this Triumph TR6 benefits from a recent restoration including a respray and plenty of mechanical reconditioning. Indeed, the engine, suspension, brakes and seemingly all moving parts are as close to new as one can get. It reportedly drives well and sounds fantastic thanks to the stainless steel exhaust.
