The Appeal
Often described as a ‘mini E-Type’, Triumph’s GT6 had more than a passing resemblance to Jaguar’s icon. Both cars began life with their sights set firmly on Le Mans victory, but only the GT6 actually achieved it.
The GT6’s fastback styling started life as a Michelotti styling exercise to improve the aerodynamics of Triumph’s race cars. The result was a first in class at Le Mans in 1965 after which the sleek car was put into production. Equipped with the 2litre six pot motor from the Vitesse, the GT6 was a proper tightly proportioned sports car, quite unlike much else on the market at the time.
The GT6 evolved alongside the Spitfire with the Mk III arriving in 1970 sporting a revised bodyshell, most notably the kamm-type rear end. Sales never quite matched the car’s potential and production ended in 1973.
This late ’72 MkIII is a low owner car running some choice upgrades that improve drivability and reliability. It is presentable and usable rather than immaculate, perfect for enjoy these most rewarding of British sports cars.
