The Appeal

The MG B has to be one of the more recognisable and loved British classics, their charm and character have gained them an adoring fan base. They offer a gateway into the rewarding world of classic motoring where you get to experience the un-spoilt thrills of top-down motoring.
This example comes with a wealth of paperwork that allows us to plot its history back to the late 1980s/early 1990s. Over the last four years, the current owner has had the chance to enjoy all of the thrills of owning a British classic. Now, it’s your chance to get behind the wheel of this charming classic.

The History and Paperwork

  • Thanks to this car's large history file it is fairly easy to plot its past life
  • Looking at the Heritage certificate we can learn a few important details
  • It was built in March 1972 and was dispatched to W H Alexander, Belfast in April 1972
  • Finished in Flame Red with a navy interior it would have been very eye-catching
  • Looking further into this history folder we are greeted with a huge pile of historic invoices
  • Some of these invoices date back to the late 1980s
  • These invoices are from MG specialists Brown and Gammons of Baldock
  • An invoice from 1992 documents an engine change
  • This engine was supplied by the Rugby MG centre, again, another MG specialist
  • At this point the odometer was reportedly reset, so the mileage shown is from 1992
  • In 2008 the car received £2,500 worth of work
  • The gearbox looks to have been changed along with the clutch and overdrive unit
  • This is when the black mohair hood was also fitted along with the chrome wheels
  • In 2019 the car found itself at Allon White sports cars and this is where the current owner saw it
  • Before they took the car away both the front wheel bearings were replaced along with other smaller parts
  • It always went through a service at this point
  • The invoice documents the car having 33,459 miles in August 2019
  • This should demonstrate how sparingly this MG B has been used in the years that have followed
  • Another more recent invoice from 2020 documents a new water pump, a new fan, and a new fan belt
  • You can spend a long time looking through all of the paperwork for this MG B
  • It’s now time that you get behind the wheel of this beautiful classic and start making memories

The Interior

  • Stepping into this MG B is like going back in time
  • Its understated black interior is in very good condition indeed
  • Let’s start by looking at the two seats fitted to this classic convertible
  • The material used to trim these seats has worn well over the years
  • There are no large areas of damage to either seat, there is a slight mark on the driver’s seat which has been photographed
  • This great condition is matched by the other areas of the interior
  • A leather wrapped Moto-Lita steering wheel has been fitted, this too is in great condition
  • The current owner has kept this car in the garage when not in use
  • This has avoided any extra UV exposure that can lead to a cracked dashboard
  • The dash in this MG B is in great condition
  • Sitting behind the Moto-Lita steering wheel you’re greeted with a bank of Smiths analogue dials
  • These all appear to work and display vital driving information
  • The oil pressure gauge works along with the water temperature gauge
  • An immobiliser/alarm system has been fitted and this worked perfectly on the day of the photos
  • The draw of the Roadster over the GT is of course the folding roof
  • With the roof down the cabin is light and airy, you also get to listen to the throaty 1.8L engine
  • The roof takes a short amount of time to erect and with it locked in place it should protect you from adverse weather
  • When you have the roof down and you wish to cover the interior you can use the included tonneau cover
  • Other interior features include the clock, radio, and a fire extinguisher in the passenger footwell
  • As you can probably tell from the photos, this interior has been looked after well
  • At the rear of the car, you’ll find the boot
  • In here is the spare wheel, the tool to remove the centre spinners, and a tonneau cover
  • Overall, the interior of this MG B roadster is in great condition and it’s just waiting for you to hop in

The Exterior

  • Externally this MG B is a very striking car
  • It looked amazing sparkling in the summer sun
  • The eye catching and deep red of this MG B is complemented by lots of chrome elements
  • The aforementioned paintwork is in very good condition across every panel
  • There weren’t any large areas of paint bubbling or other corrosion observed during the photoshoot
  • At either end of the car, you are presented with a beautiful chrome bumper
  • They both have a mirror like reflection with no pitting or corrosion present
  • On each corner, you’ll find a lovely chrome wire wheel, these add to the car's look and character
  • Once again, no damage or corrosion was noticed on these wheels either
  • An important feature of the Roadster is its folding roof
  • This car is fitted with a mohair version instead of a PVC/Vinyl material
  • The fabric of this hood is in lovely condition but there has been a repair to one of the rear windows
  • Other exterior features include the P700 headlights, mudflaps, and locking fuel cap
  • Overall, the exterior of this MG B Roadster is in lovely condition
  • Just imagine how good this beauty sitting amongst your other cars

The Mechanics

  • Under the bonnet, you’ll find the legendary 1.8L BMC B-Series engine
  • This is mated to a four-speed manual gearbox with an over drive function
  • The Overdrive is essential for when you’re cruising down national speed limit roads
  • Luckily this vital feature works as it should in this example
  • On the day of the photos, the car was taken for a 15-20 minute drive out to the location
  • During this drive, it performed well
  • The engine propelled the car down the road well with a throaty exhaust note
  • As it’s an old car a few noises here and there can be expected
  • Recently the current owner has had the water pump, fan, and fan belt replaced
  • Its last service was carried out around 1,000 miles ago
  • There is also that extensive history which documents lots of past mechanical work
  • Overall, this car's mechanical elements all appear to work well
  • Now is your chance to get behind the wheel and enjoy these simple driving pleasures
