1972 MGB GT

Highlights

  • Period Webasto sunroof
  • Body and paintwork have been previously restored
  • Prepared for regularity runs with expensive Brantz and Paterson timing kit
  • Sebring front and rear bumper delete

The Appeal

Launched in 1962 as a replacement for the aging MGA, the B used MG’s first unitary bodyshell which made it stiffer than rivals. It was a real looker, too, thanks to the combination of design guru Don Hayter and the Italian flair of Pininfarina.
It sported BMCs 1.8-litre B-series engine developing 95bhp to give it sprightly performance. Various updates took place over the years, with the most obvious being the addition of rubber bumpers, which arrived in 1974 and were designed to meet the American 5 mph bump tests.
The Roadster is more common than the GT, of which only 125,282 were made, with some 11,000 thought to still be left on UK roads. It was one of the most successful sports cars of all time, which explains why so many still survive today.
This 1972 GT has been used by the current owner for on-road regularity rallies and it has been treated to a subtle Sebring de-bumpered look and the fitment of expensive Brantz and Paterson timing gear. Together with the traditional white paintwork, period Minilite-style alloys and the Webasto sunroof it looks every inch the classic period racer.
