Photos provided by the seller

Highlights

  • A very nicely restored example of this perennially popular classic MG
  • Every aspect of the car has been addressed making for a very appealing ownership prospect
  • Complete with a good level of provenance providing paperwork
  • 12 months MOT

The Appeal

The MG Midget is a definitely British classic sports car whose stock is rising fast. The Midget’s diminutive charm, availability of parts and low cost of ownership are all contributing to the growing popularity of these starter classics. They are also surprisingly sporty with the revvy, A-Series engine pushing along a mere 700KGs of sports car very effectively.
This example adds to that inherent appeal with its vibrant colourway, great period-correct appearance, and fastidiously restored condition. With summer virtually upon us this is the perfect time to acquire this diminutive convertible classic.

The History and Paperwork

  • Having been lightly used by a number of owners
  • The mileage represents less than 2,500 miles on average per year
  • The mileage over the last 10 years has been a mere 8,000 miles or so
  • Acquired by the current owner in January 2021
  • Since then, the car has been restored by the owner, a Master Coppersmith, and a local garage
  • Accompanied by a healthy paperwork archive
  • This includes V5 and previous hard copy paperwork
  • There are also a number of invoices detailing work undertaken
  • This includes one totalling over £3,500 from a previous ownership period
  • The Midget is registered as a Historic Vehicle and, as such, is understood to be MOT and VED exempt

The Interior

  • The interior of this Midget is in a great, original condition
  • The seats are dressed in the period-correct black vinyl with the familiar box pleated central panel
  • The door cards and dash capping and facing are also finished in practical black vinyl
  • Carpets are in a complimentary coloured wool
  • Instruments are the signature white on black items with bright, chrome bezels
  • Switch gear appears original
  • A retro-fitted, three-spoke, alloy and leather steering wheel appears to be the only non-standard item in the cabin
  • Everything in here appears to be in great, used condition with no areas of significant imperfection noted or reported

This interior is perfect for a small, convertible sports car. The predominantly vinyl, period interior is designed to easily endure being caught in an impromptu downpour. Luckily the newly fitted hood is quick and easy to operate if, or when, the heavens open!

The Exterior

  • This Midget is presented in bright Bronze Yellow, one of the most eye-catching MG colours
  • The car has benefitted from a professional respray in its recent history
  • As a result, the paintwork appears to be deep and lustrous throughout
  • The brightwork of the bumpers, light surrounds and windscreen frame is in an excellent, high-shine condition
  • The little sports car sits on replacement Minilite style alloy wheels, giving it an even more sporty demeanour
  • The original Rostyle wheels are also included in the sale all fitted with good tyres
  • The car rolls on quality Toyo tyres all round
  • New steel "A" posts welded recently (See pictures with magnets attached below)
  • New stone chipped paint in boot and around all sills of the car
  • A new, black vinyl hood is fitted, and it provides a very attractive contrast to the paintwork
  • A padded roll-over hoop is also fitted for extra safety and security

As you will see from our photographic package, this is an eye-catching MG Midget with an authentic period charm. The combination of Bronze Yellow paintwork, black hood, and Minilite style wheels serves as a reminder as how attractive the pre-rubber bumper Midgets really are.
Given the car is now 50 years old, it looks fantastic and truly belies its age. The thorough restoration has been done very well and yet sympathetically to deliver a Midget with a first-class road presence.

The Mechanics

  • The headline change for this MkIII Midget over previous models was the move to the bigger 1275cc engine
  • This was a slightly detuned version of the Mini Cooper S engine originally rated at 65 bhp
  • The mechanical systems of this car have been fully addressed as part of the restoration
  • As you will see from the photographic package the engine bay presents very well indeed
  • A number of new components are in evidence attesting to the great mechanical condition of the car
  • As a result, the owner reports that all mechanical systems are in good working order
  • He reports that the car accelerates strongly and sounds great whilst doing it
  • 12 months MOT

Most MG Midget owners report of being surprised by the enthusiastic performance of the 1275cc MG Midgets. A lowly power output by today’s standards, of course, but the Midget is a light car and the A-Series engine a rev hungry one. All this combines to make for a really fun driving experience not to be quickly forgotten.

Summary

This lovely little MG is like a ray of sunshine on wheels. The vibrant Bronze Yellow paintwork and easy to operate hood makes this a perfect prospect for those long summer evenings to come. Its fully restored condition and period-correct presentation can’t help but put a smile on your face and the faces of all who see it.
The MG Midget, especially these chrome bumpered versions, is becoming more and more sought after as a great starter classic that’s cheap to run and easy to maintain. Given that, the new owner of this car is likely to enjoy a rewarding ownership experience in every sense.
