The Appeal
The MG B GT V8 is a fantastic British car that can still be found competing in club events all around the country to this day.
The original 1.8l B GT always felt like it needed something more to make the most of the excellent chassis and that arrived in 1973 in the form of the 3528cc Rover V8.
The big rover V8 actually weighed slightly less than the original MG 4-cylinder engine due to its aluminium construction, meaning that whilst the power output and torque greatly improved with the big V8 handling wasn’t negatively affected.

Whilst this GT V8 would benefit from some cosmetic work, it starts easily, runs well and the Rover V8 sounds fantastic. With gorgeous classic Pininfarina styling described by Road and Track magazine as one of the "16 of Pininfarina's Most Beautiful Designs That Aren't Ferraris."
It's easy to see why the GT V8 is one of MG’s most sought after cars.

The GT V8 really is a Grand Tourer, the elongated Pininfarina body provides plenty of room and storage space.
The bench seat in the back is very much usable and the expansive boot provides plenty of space for those longer trips away. The classic sporty MG design of the dashboard combined with black and chrome finish make this GT V8 feel really special from behind the wheel, with the design looking as good today as it did in the 70’s.

The seats are in good condition with no rips or tears and whilst they would benefit from a clean, they show little signs of wear. The dashboard would benefit from some cosmetic attention, whilst the dials present well with some patina on the chrome surrounds and trim.
The headlining appears secure and we didn’t see any rips or tears. The carpets are all present and correct and whilst they would benefit from a clean they appear to be in good condition.

The Pininfarina designed MG B GT is a fantastic looking British classic that looks particularly fetching in green.
From the large front grille to the sleek body and extensive brightwork the design of the B GT is one that has stood the test of time. Whilst there is plenty of scope for cosmetic improvement, as you can see from the images it’s still a fantastic looking car.

The Mechanics
- Gorgeous Rover 3.5L V8
- Sounds fantastic through the twin exhausts
- MOT to April 2023
- Large amount of work recently carried out including an overhaul of the brakes
- Starts easily and runs very well
The big V8 springs to life with a turn of the key and sounds absolutely fantastic through the twin exhausts with a beautiful smooth rumble at idle and reaching up to a throaty roar as the RPM comes up.
The owner tells us that the car drives very well, pulling smoothly through the gears.

The large engine bay housing the V8 presents well overall and with a quick valet it would really show off the beautiful engine. The underside presents well and all four tyres have plenty of tread.
With two new batteries, a new ignition barrel and an overhaul of the brakes it’s ready to drive and with some aesthetic improvements it will make a great example of MG’s big grand tourer.
Summary
With a combination of gorgeous Italian styling, a great chassis and a relatively lightweight V8 it’s easy to see why the B GT V8 has remained so popular.
With a long MOT and the recent work carried out this B GT V8 is perfect as a light restoration project or to simply jump in and enjoy.
