The Appeal
Mercedes-Benz had its sights on the big prize when it launched the R107. That meant its biggest market in the USA got the best versions, like this sonorous 4.5litre V8. In fact, a V8-engined SL wasn't even available in Europe until 1974, so there are comparatively few in the UK even to this day.
Many of those cars are now on Britain's shores as buyers scoop up the sleek early styling. This June 1972 car and would have been one of the first off the line and it boasts an enviable specification.
Resplendent in red over a matching interior and retaining its air conditioning, Sundym Glass, factory-fitted Becker Mexico stereo and electric aerial, you could argue very convincingly that this is the ultimate R107. Enthusiasts will also note the early trim details of these first cars which likewise remain unchanged on this cherished original example.
