The Background
The W108 S-Class models are often lauded as one the finest Mercedes Benz saloons ever made. The adage that 'quality is remembered long after the purchase price is forgotten' rings true here, and goes some way to maintaining the car's timeless appeal.
Mercedes-Benz cars have always cultivated an air of respectability and mechanical dependability, with the W108 adding grace and elegance to the mix. Even the less powerful variants attracted an appeal that many other mainstream manufacturers simply couldn’t match.

The History
First registered on 30th of June 1972, it was a show-car judging by the very low mileage.
Imported from Holland by its only keeper in the UK and in current ownership since 2018, this vehicle has recently had £2000 worth of work carried out by a specialist garage.
The car, which is part of a personal collection, has all original parts and is in honest condition for its age. It starts at the first turn of the key and according to the current owner it drives perfectly. In the past 3 years the car has covered roughly 100 KM, mostly for maintenance.
The Paperwork
Although this vehicle comes with its V5 and MOT certificate it only has limited service history, detailing some work that has been carried out at a classic specialist.
The Interior
The interior features brown/burgundy leather seats that are in very good condition, showing only some creases through age, with no scuffs or rips at all.
The instruments are clear with no scratches or crazing to the dials, and the leather-covered, wood-trimmed dashboard is unmarked.
We can say that the interior presents incredibly well overall but the rubber on the driver’s side carpet does show some age-related wear.
The originality of the interior has been retained apart from the cassette player which has been replaced at some point and the chrome and wood inserts on the door panels lend an air of distinction and luxury to the cockpit.
The Exterior
Overall, the bodywork of this 280S is in fair condition although some cosmetic work is needed here and there as highlighted in the photos.
The gold paintwork suits this luxurious vehicle to a tee, however there are some areas of corrosion beginning to show through, particularly on the lower front wheel arches but this is limited to the bodywork and structurally the car appears sound. All of the chrome trim seems to be present and should polish up nicely.
The tyres are in good shape and everything works as it should.
The Mechanics
This 280S classic luxury sedan is fitted with a gasoline-powered, six-cylinder, 2.8 litre engine. The straight-six motor, to this day, is one of Mercedes’ most proven and reliable engines and this example looks clean and complete.
The car fires instantly to life and drives exactly as it should. Aside from the aforementioned radio cassette this car features all original parts.
The Appeal
These cars were over-built and over-engineered like few vehicles ever have been. The number of second generation 280s still plodding along in less-developed countries, despite minimal maintenance, is testament to their tank-like construction.
This particular low-mileage example is in reasonable condition overall but does require some restorative fettling to bring it back to its best.
Unfortunately there is little service history with the car before being imported, yet it does come with records that show the latest works carried out by a specialist garage. The current owner, a classic car collector, is selling due to wanting to move abroad.
Please note that this is a left hand drive vehicle.
