The Appeal
Often the models built late in a car’s life are not always the best. Not so with the Elan. Chapman saved the best until last.
The Sprint, which was a sort of ‘Series 5’ Elan, got 20% more power thanks to a reworked cylinder head and big Weber DCOE 31 carbs. Those changes are alone make them desirable. Then there is the two-tone colour scheme, accented with neat details like gold decals and bumpers.
Just 856 ‘DHC’ convertibles were built like this car. It is a ‘Type G’ model, one of 642, built in 1972 and still in superb, original and unmodified condition. Look beyond the appealing yellow and white colour scheme and you will find a very well kept car that is cosmetically spot on and mechanically in very good order. The car sits on a galvanised Elan chassis.
The history file is both extensive and impressive. Recent work includes a new clutch, new dashboard - also rewired - as well as a speed service and new tyres. The car was recently fully checked over by a professional motor engineer and given a positive bill of health.
The Elan is one of the greatest sports cars ever built. This pretty example is both rare, much-historied and in great order. One not to miss.
