THE APPEAL
There’s only one place in the world where you’ll find a right-hand-drive Lancia Fulvia 1.3S with the prettier ‘low light’ frontal styling seen on LHD models, and that’s South Africa.
UK models came with the higher front lights as also seen on US-spec models, which gave the front an unbalanced appearance, but South African cars were supplied as CKD kits by Lancia and assembled on the Italian company’s behalf by Daihatsu Motors ZA, whose name appears on the car’s assembly plate. Daihatsu had contract manufacturing agreements for a number of car makers in South Africa, including all Lancia models sold there. With no need for mass production, they could share the European styling.
Fulvia Coupés were advanced cars for their day - four-wheel disc brakes and sleek styling, agonisingly pretty and wonderfully agile, with a curious 1.3-litre V4 engine.
This one has just landed from South Africa having been restored there. It’s a late 1972 model according to the VIN plate and is ready to be registered, used and enjoyed.
