1972 Jensen Interceptor III

Highlights

• A show-standard Jensen Interceptor in sought after MKIII form
 • Boasting a minuscule mileage and loads of provenance providing paperwork
 • A head-turning “Reef Blue” colourway with blue vinyl roof and blue-accented alloy wheels

The Background

The Jensen Interceptor has carved a place for itself in the 1970's hero-car hall of fame. Its appeal partly based on that renowned combination of American muscle combined with distinctive Italian sophistication. The very significant performance, for its day, was provided by a lazy but muscular V8 American engine.

This gave the luxury GT car supercar killing performance; 140MPH and sub 8 second 0-60MPH times. The ageless elegance of the exterior was courtesy of Carrozzeria Touring of Italy making this car a perpetual head-turner both at launch and today.
The Series III car was introduced in 1971 offering a range of refinements over its predecessors. Not least, the mighty engine was further enlarged to 7.2 litres. Additionally, air conditioning became standard as did GKN alloy wheels and revised and improved seating.

The History

This example of the breed was built in 1972 and there is a significant amount of factory build paperwork included with this car giving an interesting insight into its very early history. Despite a 1972 build date and the presence of paperwork and verified mileages from this period, the V5 shows a registration date of 1978. The reason for this isn’t clear in 2022 but is likely the result of some sort of administrative error on the part of the registration authorities.

The Paperwork

As you will see from our comprehensive photographic package, there is an excellent level of interesting and detailed paperwork included with this car. This, of course, includes the V5 in the name of the current owner. Other highlights include numerous copies of factory paperwork from the car’s early life, an authenticity certificate and numerous invoices substantiating recent maintenance and upgrade work.
Notable amongst these are two invoices detailing schedules of works valued in excess of £15K during the course of 2021.

The Interior

The interior presents very well indeed and is understood to be predominantly original to the car. The seats are dressed in soft and subtle blue leather. No areas of damage or discolouration were noted or reported. The carpets are finished in a deep blue, contrasting colourway and also appear to be in great, original condition.
Both door cards and headlining are in excellent used condition with no areas of concern noted. A new headlining set is included with the car but the existing one would only be considered worthy of replacement by the extremely fastidious.
All gauges and dials and switches, of which there are many, are all reported as working as they should by the current owner.

The Exterior

The “Reef Blue” paintwork of this MKIII Interceptor is in excellent condition and makes for a vibrant and head-turning colourway. The car exhibits a deep, lustrous shine and the extensive chrome-work appears to be in a first-class condition too.
The roof is finished in a lightly textured, blue vinyl in true Interceptor MKIII fashion. This is in excellent condition with no areas of damage or discolouration noted. The car has recently benefitted from a £600 exterior detailing too.
The 15-inch GKN Jensen alloy wheels are believed to be original to the car. They are inscribed with the Jensen name and a 1971 manufacture date, which is consistent with the 1972 build date of this car.

The wheels been professionally refurbished at the end of 2021 at the cost of over £500. As a consequence, the wheels present in a “factory-fresh” condition.
The pristine wheels are shod in Cooper Lifeliner tyres in a period-correct size and sidewall proportion. The tyres have clearly covered very few miles and are fished with a discreet white sidewall line.

The Mechanics

As you would expect from such a low mileage car which has had over £15,000 recently spent on it, the mechanical systems of this car are reported as being in excellent condition throughout. During our visit the car started well on a very cold day and ticked over smoothly and evenly without any unexpected smoke or noises.
Feel free to study the comprehensive photographic package included here which documents the subject of the recent significant expenditure lavished on this Interceptor.

The Appeal

The Jensen Interceptor has become a “classic hero-car” in the years since its launch. Its svelte and sophisticated looks mated to the huge and muscular V8 powerplant has always been an intoxicating combination. It’s a car that can’t help but make an entrance. It looks amazing and sounds even better. Very much the automotive equivalent of an iron fist in a velvet glove.
This particular car surely represents the pinnacle of classic Interceptor ownership. Offering a minuscule original mileage, jaw-dropping condition inside and out and a significant history of “no-expense spared” maintenance and improvement. It is hard to imaging a better example of an Interceptor MKIII being attainable outside of museum collections.
