The Appeal
Where might Jaguar have gone next with the E-Type? That’s the fascinating question, perhaps answered by this one-off Series III.
Beneath the ostensibly standard-looking bonnet with its smart blue metallic paintwork - only a mesh grille hints at anything other than standard - lies a 4litre AJ6 XJS engine mated to a 5spd Getrag manual box.
It is an entirely appropriate Jaguar-sourced modification that updates this 52 year old car for modern driving. The AJ6 engine is legendarily robust and elivers much the same performance, albeit with a more responsive edge and better economy, than the original V12. It is also entirely appropriate - Jaguar did plan to launch a straight six version of the Series III but pulled the model just before introduction.
The car was extensively professionally restored in 2008 and has covered less than 7,000 miles since, most of it in the hands of the current keeper. He has clearly looked after it, reserving it for dry days and garage storing it when not in use.
Inside there is a bespoke two-tone leather interior, which is in similarly well preserved condition to the bodywork.
This is an intriguing E-Type that hides its secret well. Once unleashed, however, it offers a level of economy and reliability that makes it perfect for modern road use.
