1972 Ford Mach 1 Fastback 6.0 V8

Highlights

  • Renowned Cleveland V8 engine
  • Bare metal re-spray in Mustang Grey during current ownership
  • Recently received a new, full wiring loom

The Appeal

Following the first-generation Mustang Mach 1, Ford offered a facelift version from 1971 until 1973. The most noticeable differences were the dual scoop bonnet, fastback style sports roof, a rear spoiler and re-designed honeycomb front grille which also offered dual sports lamps. Ford didn't stop at purely aesthetic improvements; the facelift version would also offer competition suspension with improved springs and shocks.

Buyers could choose from a range of engine options, of course all were large capacity V8's, starting from 4.9L and going all the way up to 7.0L. There is no dispute that the Mach 1 is a true American muscle car that has inspired many since its release!

The Interior

  • Excellent condition overall
  • Recently re-upholstered black leather seats
  • Custom 'carbon effect' hydrodipped dashboard with LED interior lights
The current owner of this wonderful Mach 1 made the wise decision to restore the interior in an all-black colourway, which works perfectly with the exterior. Some convenient and tasteful modifications have been made such as a retro style digital stereo head unit which offers Bluetooth connectivity. Two good size speakers are mounted to the parcel shelf should you ever want a different soundtrack to the wonderful V8 upfront.

Furthermore, a digital dash cluster gives for better functionality while still having a period correct appearance. Note the odometer reading only reflects mileage since its fitting, past MOT's give for a more accurate mileage reading. The steering wheel was also replaced as well as custom made pedals and a custom plaque mounted to the glovebox.

The carpets and floor mats were all recently replaced and likewise to the seats, remain in excellent condition, there are no rips nor tears to the leather with only some small signs of wear to the rear seats and rear trim panels. The headlining is in excellent condition, present and secure. Likewise, the boot has full carpet present with the spare wheel removed by the current owner.

The Exterior

  • Recent bare metal re-spray in Mustang Grey
  • Desirable, upgraded LED headlights
  • NACA Ram-Air bonnet
  • 15' Magnum 500 alloys with Cooper Cobra Tyres
As with the interior, the exterior of this Mustang remains in excellent condition overall with the current owner investing a large amount for a bare metal respray followed by a ceramic coating. The paintwork only has a handful of the smallest chips throughout a relatively large vehicle.

The black front splitter and rear spoiler are also in excellent condition and give for a lovely road presence which work in tandem with the glorious Magnum 500 alloys. Matching Cooper Cobra tyres all remain with very good tread, there is some slight corrosion present on the alloys but this is only noticeable when inspecting closely. All brightwork, badges and glass remain in excellent condition throughout with the current owner reporting the rear windscreen trim is still original, also in very good condition.

Finally, a very tasteful upgrade is the LED headlights which give for much better illumination as well as contrasting well with the yellow sports lights mounted inside. The bonnet recently received new prop springs which causes slight panel gaps on either side and may need to be remedied in future.

The Mechanics

  • Upgraded Cleveland H code 351 V8 reported to give for 250+ BHP
  • Wonderful sounding stainless steel exhaust
  • Desirable disc brakes for front wheels fitted as standard
  • Upgraded MSD ignition system
The current owner acquired this example with some very desirable upgrades present on the engine. Namely, a 4-barrel Holley carburettor, Edelbrock intake manifold, Micky Thompson alloy rocker covers and MSD ignition system, thought to give for around 250+ bhp.

A stainless-steel dual exhaust ensures that this wonderful engine not only sounds the part but performs as it should. Coupled to a 3-speed FMX cruise-o-matic gearbox and boasting factory power steering with front disc brakes, this Mach 1 isn't the workout you may imagine when driving, instead a refined yet powerful muscle car.

The engine bay remains in a very good, used condition with some slight corrosion present across more exposed areas. The underside also remains in a good, used condition with no visible evidence of any fluid leaks. Finally, the current owner reports that he had the electrical loom fully re-wired which included the aforementioned digital dash and LED interior lights.

Summary

As Mach 1 Mustangs go, this 1972 facelift example remains in excellent condition overall. The engine has previously received extensive upgrades that give for a truly exhilarating engine and soundtrack.

The current owner has invested a large amount of money restoring the interior and exterior, all of which was done tastefully and to a high standard with some convenient modern-day upgrades. This is a truly wonderful vehicle that would be an excellent addition for anyone in the market who desires a classic American muscle car!
