The Appeal
The essence of the Fiat 500’s appeal has always been that it does everything a proper car should do but in the most minimalist manner, whilst retaining that uniquely Italian automotive flair.
Finished to a very good standard and featuring the larger 594cc Abarth-designed engine present in all 500s from 1971, this smart little Italian offers a lot of summer fun and never fails to draw attention at every opportunity. Featuring a new fold-back sunroof and sporting various Abarth emblems, it’s an excellent replica and a real head-turner.
The History and Paperwork
First registered in Italy December 1972 and imported to the UK as a 500F Berlina in 2015, it has had just two UK owners. The odometer still reads in kilometres and shows 31688, fully supported by MOT certificates, UK invoices and the original service book (“little green book”) from its days in Italy, showing numerous stamps between 1970 and 2010. A box of spare parts comes with the car.
- V5C present and correct, showing two owners since arriving in UK
- Replica Abarth 595 badging and a comprehensive list of other body furniture, exterior and interior, supplied and fitted in September 2015
- Genuine 31,688 kms total (left-hand drive, odometer reads km/h)
- MoT certificates, a sheaf of UK invoices (some of them incorrectly identifying the car as a 500R), original Italian “little green” service book
- Kept in a dry locked garage, only being taken out on dry warm days: no winter driving
The Interior
- Retro bucket seats fitted to the car, one of which has a tear – factory-fitted original seats are included with the car
- Abarth gear knob
- Carpets and floormats in superb condition
- Headlining and sunroof lining very clean
- Original switchgear (well, lights & wipers) and Veglia speedometer present
- Rear seats in excellent condition, no real evidence of wear and certainly with only one tear that has been repaired
The Exterior
- The exterior replicates the 1972 factory 595 Abarth, using all original parts.
- 12” Borrani steels wheels with Abarth centres, Nankang 145/70 R12 tyres in good shape
- Original wheeljack present, spare tyre present and correct with reasonable tread
- Comprehensively undersealed – vital in these cars, see photos
- Brand-new windscreen fitted in 2016
- New and correct replacement full-length sunroof fitted
The Mechanics
- 594cc Abarth-designed engine for 500F Berlina, producing 27bhp
- Synchromesh 4-speed gearbox fitted (second, third and fourth gears only), with chrome gate
- Abarth-branded oil sump, visible to rear
- New clutch fitted October 2016
- February 2022; oil change service, air filter, plugs, leads, condenser, new Weber 28 IMB larger carburettor
Summary
There’s something quintessentially Italian about Fiat 500s old and new, but with so many post-2007 modern ones running around, the 1960s and 70s predecessors are becoming increasingly valuable, especially with low mileage and rust-free – like this one.
The Abarth replication may be largely cosmetic, but many Abarth clones have been created and the best ones can capture all the visual spirit of the original, without the need for a second mortgage. Beware no fuel gauge – just a warning light when you’re down to about 1 litre: this is correct for the 500F Berlina model. With a lot of detailing work done, plus the all-important underbody protection, an almost-new clutch and an interior in fine condition, this 500F Berlina Abarth replica represents simple fun, cheap classic motoring and a decent investment.
