The Attractions

The 246 was a new type of Ferrari, so different that Enzo didn’t even badge it as a Maranello product. It took its name from the illustrious V6 mounted midships.
It was a step into the unknown for the firm, an entry level model with a new layout. But it was the springboard for the Ferrari we know now, a firm as renowned for its mid-engined sports cars as its luxurious GTs.
The ‘Series E’ model’s arrival in 1970 signalled the car’s availability in the USA. Just 1,624 were built. This is one of those North American market cars, identifiable by its shaped, white front indicators and smaller front bumper ‘horns.’ It is one of only 828 GTs built in 1972 and notable as one of the first cars with the right hand wipers rather than the earlier ‘clap hand’ version. This car appears to be fitted with the optional ‘Group 4’ flared arches.
The car is part of the high end ‘Forgione’ collection, owned by a well known Italian personality, and said to have been his favourite. It was professionally restored 15 years ago in classic Rosso Red over black leather. He used it exceptionally sparingly, carefully garaging it inbetween outings. As with his other cars, the Dino was regularly checked and maintained by Snr Forgione’s in-house mechanic.

The Condition

  • Classic Rosso Ferrari paintwork restored 15 years ago
  • Very limited use has kept the paintwork in excellent condition
  • The bodywork presents very well and appears to be fitted with the optional 'Group 4' wheel arches
  • Body panels and underbody are in excellent condition with no problems to report
  • Black leather interior in original, unmodified condition
  • Some light signs of wear visible in photographs
  • Red carpet re-done during restoration and in good condition
  • Well-detailed interior with three-spoke steering wheel with Dino badge and Clarion stereo
  • Fitted with original Campagnolo five-spoke alloy wheels in good condition
Pininfarina’s lines for the 246GT are astonishing. And influential too, inspiring generations of Ferraris right up to the present day. The lines cleverly disguise the mid-engined layout.
This car is specified to North American trim, most readily identifiable by the reshaped clear front indicators and smaller horned front bumpers. It also appears to be fitted with the rare and desirable ‘Group 4’ optional factory arch extensions.
It was carefully refinished in Rosso Red as part of a comprehensive restoration 15 years ago. The very sparing use since has preserved the condition and the interior, which is trimmed in factory-correct leather. There are some very minor interior points to note in photographs, but nothing that detracts or wouldn’t be easy to rectify.

The Mechanics

  • 2,419 cm³ Dino V6 engine producing 192 hp
  • We have been informed that the car has correct serial numbers and original engine
  • 5-speed manual gearbox
  • Mechanics overhauled 15 years ago during restoration
  • Fitted with original starter motor
  • No operating or driving problems have been reported to us
The Dino V6, originally the brainchild of Enzo’s son, was a brilliant device. So good that it evolved from powering the firm’s 50s racers to underpin various Ferraris continuously into the 1990s.
It is a key part of the 246GT’s appeal. These cars, as the name suggests, got a 2.4litre version of the motor which delivers 192bhp via a 5spd gearbox. We understand that both items, gearbox and engine, are the matching numbers, original units.
This car was mechanically overhauled during the restoration 15 years ago. It has barely been used since, Snr Forgione preferring to admire it’s gorgeous lines rather than rack up more miles on this very low mileage car. When not in use it has been garaged as part of his collection and regularly checked and maintained by his in-house mechanic.
The vendor reports that the original starter motor is fitted. As is typical of 246GTs the starter can be slow to engage, but works correctly and the car runs well with no issues to report.
