1972 Fantic TI Sports Moped

Highlights

  •  Immaculate showpiece
  •  Zero miles Italian import
  •  Italian Identity book
  •  50cc Minarelli engine
  •  ‘Confirmation of Authenticity’ Certificate

THE APPEAL

Fantic Motor motorcycles were founded in 1968, manufacturing enduro motorcycles and go-karts and still produce dual-sport competition bikes and a range of e-bikes today.
Following the introduction of the “sixteener law” in the UK, the race was on to offer teenagers a ‘sports’ moped. Although they couldn’t exceed 50cc and were required to incorporate pedals, the new law mentioned nothing about how fast the bikes could go!.
Built in Barzago, Italy, the lightweight Fantic TI (Turismo Internazionale) was first imported to the UK in 1972 and was one of the fastest on the market. Capable of 50-55mph, they soon became a popular choice with young 2-wheeled fans.
This very rare and collectable Italian import is a stunning example and looks virtually new.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  •  Imported to the UK in 2018
  •  Nova paperwork
  •  ‘Confirmation of Authenticity’ Certificate
This amazing little bike comes with it’s Carta D’Identità (Italian identity book), and according to DVLA records, was first registered on the 10th April 1972.
It was imported in 2018 by a Mr Askast from Chelmsford and in August 2021 was sold to a gentleman in Poole who proudly displayed his Fantic in his ‘Man Cave’.
It was registered on the 1st August 2021 but we don’t know if it was restored prior or following it’s import to the UK.
A printed copy of the online Nova import details come with the bike along with the V5 (in the previous owners name) and a ‘Confirmation of Authenticity’ certificate from The Old Italian Bike Register. This Fantic has not had a UK MOT and is currently on Sorn.

THE CONDITION

  •  Original specification
  •  Fantic orange paintwork
  •  Superb detailing
Emulating the appearance of it’s bigger motorcycle cousins, this perfectly-formed TI doesn’t look like it’s ever been ridden and has clearly been restored to a high level. As far as we know, it is unmodified and presented in original factory specification.
Being a non-UK specification bike, there is no speedo or pedals.
From the braced handlebars to the rear reflector, the overall condition and detailing of this miniature street-trail bike is exceptional. The ‘Fanticmotor’ decals are also spot-on
The silver painted duplex frame (with correct frame number) and appealing ’70’s bright orange paintwork is unmarked, and the ancillaries, vinyl seat, lighting, rubber grips, original mudguards, side stand, etc., are all in great condition too.
The chrome wheels are in good order and are fitted with a Fee Rubber tyre up front and a Ceat brand at the rear. Both have plenty of tread.

THE MECHANICS

  •  Minarelli engine
  •  4-speed gearbox
  •  Ready to ride
The Minarelli P4 49.6cc engine should produce around 6.5bhp @ 7,000rpm from a 12:1 compression ratio and was staggering performance back in the 1970’s. A nod to the Ferrari prancing horse - the Fantic horse logo - is mounted on each side of the alloy casing.
This clean 2-stroke is fitted with the correct 14mm Dellorto carburettor and is the 4-speed version. A light clutch is a bonus for those busy gear changes.
We can’t confirm the condition or mileage of the engine, but the vendor assures us that it hasn’t been ridden since being imported but kick-starts into life easily and runs well. The electrics are said to function as they should along with tele-hydraulic front forks, twin rear shocks and drum brakes.
A couple of invoices show that two carburettor parts and a gasket set were supplied by Bob Wright Motorcycles in September 2021.

SUMMARY

This Fantic TI is without doubt a 1970’s icon and collectors-piece in showroom condition.
A well balanced, lightweight and nippy machine, it should be ready to ride if you wish, or would definitely make a stunning addition to anyone's Italian-bred bike collection.
