The Attractions

At the beginning of the 1960s, with the launch of the Neue Klasse saloons, equipped with a 1500 version of the engine that would later be known as the M10, BMW began to delineate its new identity as a manufacturer of prestigious cars with a sporting character.
To meet public demand, for which the high price of the Neue Klasse was an obstacle, the 1600-2 was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966, a shorter and lighter two-door version with a simpler interior and a 1.6-litre, 85 hp version of the M10 engine, with independent rear suspension and front disc brakes.
Fast, technically sophisticated and quite versatile, the BMW 1600-2 was a two-door four-seater that was agile and fun, suited to the needs of the average family but capable of great driving satisfaction and offered at an affordable price.
In 1967, the 1600-2 was joined by the 1600ti with two carburettors, and in 1968, in response to increasingly fierce competition in the sector, a two-litre version was launched, the BMW 2002, which in a version with two carburettors offered 119 hp and could reach 185 km/h.
On this high-performance engine, from 1971 onwards, the very popular and sophisticated Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection was fitted, destined to be a great success also in racing, which increased output to 130 hp and offered greater reliability.
This power unit, with which the BMW 2002 tii was a major protagonist in competition in the 1970s, was later used as the basis for the famous 170 hp 2002 Turbo version, equipped with a KKK turbocharger which allowed scorching acceleration but was decidedly less tractable and exploitable than the aspirated version in sports driving.
This 1972 BMW 2002 tii is equipped with the more powerful and desirable two-litre engine with mechanical injection. It features the pure lines of the first series, with the classic round rear lights and aluminium grille.
We are told that this car, with just over 70,000 km from new, is completely original and features its factory metallic silver paint covered by a protective glaze, a preserved interior in remarkably good condition, Campagnolo alloy wheels from the period and very interesting mechanics, enhanced by the rare optional self-locking differential and a Kugelfischer injection system that has just been reinstalled after being entrusted to the care of a specialist who has carefully overhauled it.
Carefully maintained by its third and current owner, who has always kept it in a heated garage, this 2002 tii has been registered with the ASI since 2003 and is equipped with its beautiful and rare original number plates and original service and maintenance booklets.
Today, the BMW 2002 tii is one of the most sought-after and coveted Bavarian classics, with constantly rising prices. This well-presented and highly original example represents an important opportunity to acquire a car with a glorious history that offers an exciting and stimulating driving experience.
