The Appeal
The Alfa Romeo Spider was the sports car for the more discerning driver. Sure, Triumph, MG, and their ilk were still excellent cars, but with their twin-cam powerplants, class-defining silhouette, and excellent handling, the pretty Pininfarina-penned roadster was a smash hit the moment it hit the market. Over the course of its nearly thirty-year tenure, it underwent a programme of gentle updates and restyles.
The Series 2 arrived in 1970 and offered a long, distinctive Kamm tail. This improved luggage capacity, at the expense of the original boat tail. This made for an altogether more modern-looking car, and a more practical roadster - but what really set it apart was the steady evolution of that oh-so-sonorous Twin-Cam. The car quickly developed from 1600cc to 1750cc, then to the 2000cc that the Spider is arguably best known for.
This cemented the Spider's reputation for pure fun—and refined fun, at that. Fast, agile, and nimble, it's a rather more sophisticated ride than its somewhat utilitarian English rivals and continues to rightfully capture the attention of enthusiasts.
This 1972 American-market car arrived on British soil in 1989, when it was swiftly converted to Right-Hand Drive. Since then, it's clearly lived quite the peaceful life—it's in clean, solid order throughout and has been gently upgraded into an altogether more reliable, capable, and usable roadster.
