The Appeal
The Alfa Romeo 1600 GT Junior was introduced in 1972, and was intended to fit right between the entry level 1300 GT and the larger displacement 2000 GT. The 1600 GT was based on a shortened Giulia chassis and was fit with essentially the same engine as the Giulia Sprint GTV, a 1570cc double overhead camshaft engine which produced an impressive—for the time—108bhp. This was enough to propel the 1600 Junior to 60mph in right around 9.3 seconds, and allowed a top speed of 115 mph.
This particular example 1972 model has been nearly fully restored by a previous owner in 2017, and just requires the finishing touches before it is complete; many of the missing elements are supplied in the spare parts that come along with the sale. This Alfa is furnished with a replacement 1750cc engine, offering a bit more horsepower, but as such is not numbers-matching.
The History and Paperwork
- Imported from South Africa in 2017
- Full restoration completed by previous owner to a very high standard
- MOT exempt but passed 2017 with no advisories, travelled 9 kilometres since
The vehicle began life in South Africa, where in 2017 it was restored and renewed. Since being brought to the UK, this Alfa has done just over 9 kilometres, and has been dry stored since arrival.
Coming along with the car we have a strong history file which includes invoices for work done and parts purchased during the restoration process. With receipts for restoration parts and labour reportedly totalling over £18,000, there isn’t a part of the car that hasn’t been gone through and renewed; from the underside, suspension, drivetrain, and brakes, to the interior, seats, engine bay, and exterior, the vehicle has been restored to a nearly-new state. Additionally, there is a selection of spare parts, including the front and rear bumpers, some body seals, door handles, seat belts, a few engine gaskets and an intake runner, window cranks, body emblems (stating made by Bertone), and a new windshield. The owner will also supply a brand-new handbook.
Care has been taken to preserve the originality of the vehicle while keeping it drivable and comfortable, and it has been re-finished down to the bare metal. An exception to this being an updated 1750 engine being fitted to provide a bit more power, and upgraded Bilstein suspension system. The vehicle is currently sitting on 6x14” GTA Style alloy wheels, but does additionally come with original steel wheels and centre caps.
The vehicle is MOT/Tax exempt, but the last MOT was performed in 2017 after restoration, with zero advisories.
The Interior
- Black leather interior, a perfect colour combination to the red and yellow paintwork
- Overall condition is excellent
- All electronics and gauges functioning as they should
The black coloured interior perfectly suits the paint job and chrome work. The interior is in overall nearly-new condition. It’s very clear that the vehicle has been dry stored and was cared for during its restoration and afterwards, as the soft bits are in great condition and show no signs of sun-fading or neglect.
The interior and dashboard are simple and very functional, clearly to-the-point and with usability and practicality in mind. Everything is placed within easy reach, all of the dials are easy to read, and it all feels solid and robust. The polished metal steering wheel with beautiful black leather wrap and Alfa logo detail on the horn button matches gracefully to the rest of the car, upholstery, and dials. The owner states the electronics, knobs, and toggles are all in working order.
The black seats are finished nicely with red stitchwork, and in great condition with almost no signs of use or aging. Shifter and handbrake boots are like-new and fit the rest of the interior styling. The carpets are in great condition as well, and will clean up well with only minor signs of use on the driver’s side rubber footrest bit.
The boot is clean and tidy, with all elements looking as-new, even underneath the carpets, as pictured. The vehicle comes with a full-size spare tire which matches the spare steel set supplied.
The Exterior
- Excellent condition paintwork and brightwork
- Bright and vibrant red and yellow paintwork – perfectly suits an Alfa Romeo
- Underside of the vehicle shows no signs of corrosion and is near-flawless after in-depth restoration
The outside of this Alfa is just as good or better than the inside. The stunning and vibrant red and yellow paint really reinforce the sporty nature of the vehicle. The bodywork is all in order as well; with chrome brightwork shining like new everywhere you look.
The vehicle’s side windows and rear windscreen glass is in excellent condition, with hardly any signs of use whatsoever. The front windscreen could do with replacing as there are some windshield wiper grooves present, but there is a replacement windscreen that comes with the sale. Headlights, taillights, and indicator lights are all in above average condition and show no signs of fading or hazing.
Exterior rubbers and seals are all in excellent condition and have no signs of age or wear at all.
The wheels are in great visual condition, with no signs of curb rash or damage.
The underside of the vehicle is stunning, with almost no signs of aging or use, as it has only travelled 9km since restoration. With every aspect having been gone through and replaced or refurbished, it is refreshed and ready to be driven.
The Mechanics
- 1750cc inline-4 engine ready and willing, just needs carburettor tune-up
- Fully mechanically restored
- Owner states it starts right up, shifts smoothly, and handles with finesse
The engine bay shows very little signs of use. It has been cared for since the complete restoration, and as such is said to be in an absolutely ready and reliable state, just needing the carburettors to be balanced and tuned. With an exhaust system replacement in the restoration, the vehicle sounds great and has a great exhaust note which is refined and quiet enough to still enjoy the intake and engine sound up front.
The owner states the suspension, steering, and pickup are all as good or better than to be expected. The suspension and entire underside of the car looks almost-new, with little signs of use since the restoration. The car runs straight and does exactly what it’s told. There are no unexpected quirks to quarrel with and the ride reinforces its Alfa Romeo nameplate.
Summary
This Alfa is ready to be driven. The owner states it as being in immaculate condition and very eager to have its finishing touches put into place, and to finally be driven like it was intended to be driven. Being so close to finished, this is a great chance to pick up an excellently restored and mechanically sound example of a classic Italian motoring icon.
