The Appeal
The VW camper is a revolutionary icon of Volkswagen - in any configuration, needs absolutely no introduction. The impact these vans have had over the decades have been recognised by the masses. From the hardworking backgrounds of the delivery vans used by emergency services and commercial businesses, to the countercultural movement known as the Hippie movement back in the 60’s. These vans were at the forefront of it all!
This particular 1971 example has been charmingly restored by a previous owner, now known as “Ruby”, both externally and internally. The restoration was cleverly undertaken on the interior using 70’s and 80’s themed beer memorabilia, which suits the van impeccably.
The lovely 1972 Eriba Pan Familia caravan (known as "Murray") was a welcome addition in 2020, being painted to match the lovely Ruby, a real match made in heaven. Murray and Ruby are now ready to hit the road on plenty of new adventures.

Both the T2 and the Pan Familia make a rather handsome tandem. Seeing a T2 in as charming condition as this is a wonderful sight on its own - but when accompanied by its own matching caravan it makes us feel giddy. The interior of the T2 is very well put together. The keeper which imported the vehicle to the UK back in 2004 ensured that the vehicle underwent a thorough restoration both inside and out. On the inside of the van, all of the seats were reupholstered with new vinyl, as were the door cards to match. The interior walls were then decorated with a mix of 70’s and 80’s beer memorabilia, and it looks fantastic!
The living space in the rear of the camper really is a sight to behold, and a rather homely place to be once you’re settled. Floor panels all appear to be in good condition, and the vinyl seats have held up to the years fantastically with no apparent signs of damage or rips. The wooden storage panelling under the seats and beside the door entrance is well maintained and provides some welcome storage space for those family journeys. All windows are fitted with matching plaid red and white curtains which tie in perfectly with the seats, and the louvred windows still function as you would expect them to!
This being a Westfalia variant, it includes the extendable roof which allows passengers the headroom to stand up in the centre of the vehicle as well as introduces some ventilation. The expandable section shows itself in excellent condition with the canvas portion showing no signs of damage, just some areas of colour transfer but nothing excessive.
Moving on to the Eriba, much of the same praise can be echoed here! The original interior is in exceptional condition throughout, featuring overhead compartments, a wardrobe and additional storage under the seating. The central table folds down which allows for lounge space for any seatmates, accommodating up to 4 people. The vinyl seats are also able to fold down, allowing for a three-berth bed!
Also encapsulated in the little Eriba is a complete kitchen fitted with a functional gas cooker, a sink and tap, a functional fridge, gas connections for the stove as well as electrical outlets (220/240V) and USB sockets! The roof also pops up on the Pan Familia, just like the bus allowing for headroom for occupants - not only that, but makes it look like a proper mini-me of the T2.
Overall, both the T2 and the Eriba make outstanding living quarters for anyone out on the road. The T2 alone would be extremely admirable, however the addition of the little caravan in matching outfit makes for an amazing pairing.
The Exterior
- Chianti Red paintwork
- T2 externally restored and repainted in 2004
- Eriba repainted in 2020
- External front sun visor
- Towbar and 12V electronics
- Undersealed carriage
- Brightwork in seemingly excellent condition
- Pop-up awning comes with the vehicle
Come on. You can’t say these two don’t look absolutely magnificent together, with their matching exterior paintwork and their dashing character. They were practically made for one another!
Starting with the T2, it’s reported that it was completely stripped back to bare metal for a full restoration back in 2004 when it was imported to the UK by a previous keeper. Painted the original Chianti Red and fully rust proofed afterwards, it still remains a lovely and well maintained example even after nearly two decades passing.
There are of course some areas which need attention however, the owner has noted that there are paint bubbles around the bus, lower portions of the doors (last 4 pictures in the gallery) will need seen to and there are small holes which will need repair - aside from that though it's just general wear and tear from use like small scuffs, stone chips etc.
Onto the Eriba, it remains in handsome shape thanks to a fresh lick of paint in 2020 when it was purchased, matching the colour scheme of the T2 in Chianti red and an off-white upper half to match the vans bumpers and roof. It still presents itself excellently! There are of course some gentle signs of use, but nothing really to shout about. All of the brightwork trim appears to be in well kept condition and the wheels are as charming as ever with their chrome VW caps that are period correct for its van counterpart. The only thing the owner notes which will need attention is the handbrake arm on the towing attachment will need to be fixed.
Overall, could you really name a better pair than this? Ruby and Murary really are a fantastic pair, and turn heads absolutely everywhere they go - and rightly so, you can’t help but get excited when you see these two cruising down the road.
The Mechanics
- 1,641cc air-cooled engine
- Manual Freeway Flyer gearbox
- Electronic fuel pump
- Weber 32/36 carburetor
- Front disc brakes
- Engine and gearbox have less than 3,000 miles in total
Excellent mechanical health is portrayed through this lovely camper, thanks to a good maintenance history for one, but the other reason is that the engine and gearbox had been replaced less than 3,000 miles ago we’re told - so you should have many, many miles yet before you even need to worry about anything!
The engine is reported to start at the turn of a key with no hiccups, producing that well-known air-cooled clatter settling down to a smooth idle after almost no time at all. Of course, these 1641cc gives Ruby plenty of power to cruise leisurely along with the Eriba Pan Familia.
The vehicle has been fitted with disc brakes up front which is a welcome addition, and they’re reported to function excellently with a good confident bite. An electric fuel pump has also been fitted for improved reliability. It seems that this lovely T2 won’t be lettering anyone down anytime soon!
Summary
We feel like this is one of those auctions where it doesn’t really need an outro… If you’re not sold by now on this duo’s outstanding presence then we won’t know what will push you over the fence. Suited for the perfect family getaways, or even an exciting business venture, your options really aren’t limited here.
Old buses like these are quickly becoming investments in conditions such as this - a nice one is becoming harder and harder to come by, and the hardcore VW nuts are always willing to pay top dollar for a well-maintained example.

We're sure that Ruby and Murray will be a very welcome addition to anyone's home.
