1971 Triumph TR6 LHD

Highlights

  • Well presented in highly original form
  • New interior recently fitted
  • Extensive history file
  • Desirable overdrive car with new clutch

The Appeal

Straight six open top splendour. The Triumph TR6 was perhaps the best of the bunch when looking at the TR lineup. The British roadster scene was becoming alarmingly scarce by the time the TR6 arrived on the scene but it reminded buyers that there was still an option for a good quality traditional British roadster, and as such is often argued as one of the last of its kind.
Notably successful across the pond in the US, American buyers snapped up a great deal of TR6s from new including this lovely 1971 model which resided in New York prior to its arrival back on UK shores. An entirely well presented, highly original example, it has been well cared for and enthusiast owned throughout its time here in the UK and sits as a surprisingly usable, undeniably stylish British classic, now looking for a new loving home.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in December of 1971
  • Factory LHD car destined for the United States
  • Found by the current owner around 5 years ago residing in New York
  • The vendor fell in love with the car and subsequently bought it and had it shipped back to the UK
  • Just a minor refresh, namely a battery and some fuel saw the TR6 brought back to life and it has been lovingly used ever since
  • Accompanied by an extensive collection of invoices for parts bought and servicing work undertaken on the car, predominantly from specialist outfit Rimmer Bros
  • Fully UK registered with accompanying DVLA importation and approval documents
  • Both tax and MOT exempt due to the car’s age and historic status
  • V5 registration document present with the vehicle

The Interior

  • Exceptionally well presented, highly original interior space
  • Vendor informs us that this is a new interior, fitted for this season
  • A more unusual darker black theme within here, a bold and classy styling choice
  • Factory LHD setup
  • Great quality deep black upholstery throughout
  • Sculpted sports seats are in impeccable form and look to be in effectively brand new shape with just a small notable blemish on the driver’s side upper bolster
  • Plush black carpeting used throughout
  • Smart and clean black dash panel with dark wood insert, all in good shape
  • Wonderful collection of gauges and dials reside within the centre panel, detailed off with black trim rings to really play into the darker motif in here
  • Vendor informs that in the last couple of weeks the speedometer has stopped working
  • Three spoke black steering wheel of a similarly high standard to the rest of the cabin
  • Sizeable carpeted rear boot area

The Exterior

  • Excellent, bold Karmann styling. Arguably one of the finest from the TR lineup
  • Showcases wonderful deep blue paintwork, which presents in great overall form
  • Contrasting red pinstripe which works its way around the bodywork and trim
  • Naturally there are some minor age related marks and blemishes in areas of the bodywork, however nothing to be considered major or that detract from the TR6’s excellent aesthetics
  • Vendor informs that new front and rear chrome bumpers have been fitted
  • Glass work presents nicely with some areas of tarnishing to the front windscreen rubber
  • Black convertible top is in great form with just a few minor blemishes to be seen
  • Roof unlatches, folds and closes comfortably and with general ease
  • Panel gaps appear straight and consistent across the car
  • Lighting and lenses are in great shape, including the iconic front headlights and oversized indicators
  • Desirable and arguably the most stylish deep dish steel TR6 wheels sit comfortably at all four corners to give the TR6 a wonderful stance and road presence
  • The wheels themselves are in great form and exhibit nicely

The Mechanics

  • Tried and tested 2.5 litre straight six engine setup
  • Exceptionally clean engine bay, clearly a well cared for car from a mechanical perspective
  • In great overall mechanical form, having been well maintained throughout its time here in the UK
  • The vendor informs that extensive work has been performed focusing around the clutch system in the car, with a new clutch, cross shaft lever, fibreglass bell housing and clutch slave cylinder all being fitted, with the majority of parts being sourced from specialist Rimmer Bros
  • New exhaust fitted as highlighted by the brilliantly clean twin tailpipes and rear silencer
  • A wonderful driving experience is reported from the TR6, we are told it fires into life comfortably and has overdrive working correctly, although it should be noted that an auto electrician has mixed the wires with the ones for the reversing lights which will need rectifying
  • Raising the car on a lift allows for a great inspection of the underside, highlighting what appears to be a great, well preserved, solid example of a TR6

Summary

An iconic British classic. Certainly one of the last of its kind. With its Karmann styling and wonderful straight six driveline, the Triumph TR6 should be seen as a highly significant car both in the history of Triumph and the British automotive industry in general. Truly, a wonderful nod to the impeccable British roadster. This early LHD car presents impeccably well inside and out, and courtesy of some mechanical refurbishments and a new interior, will make a wonderful, entirely usable showpiece for many years to come.
