The Appeal
In the aftermath of the 1955 Le Mans disaster, Mercedes-Benz withdrew its factory teams from motorsport. It would take until the late '60s for them to get involved once more and it's all thanks to then independent tuning company AMG and the 300 SEL 6.3.
Designed by Mercedes-Benz legends Paul Bracq and Friedrich Geiger, the W109 was a trailblazing luxury saloon, with self-levelling air suspension and a range-topping option of the 300hp 6.3-litre M100 V8, borrowed from the 600 Grosser. It was this car a fledgeling AMG would transform into the "Red Pig" - a car that would go on to win numerous touring car races. It was as quick, if not quicker, than contemporary Ferraris.
This 1971 300 SEL 6.3 was supplied now to Madrid, Spain in left-hand drive. It's offered in original, unrestored condition, having only been partially repainted in the past. The Spanish climate, ultra-low mileage and a lifetime of garage storage have ensured this Mercedes is very well-preserved and reportedly corrosion-free.
With only 23,000 km on the clock, confirmed by the Spanish traffic report, and a history of careful ownership, this car is a rare and exciting find. Recent maintenance includes air suspension elements, a complete new stainless steel exhaust, and much more...
