1971 Lancia Fulvia Coupé 1600 HF Lusso Series II

Highlights

  • One of just 3,690 Series II 1600 HFs ever made
  • High-end Lusso specification
  • Recent import from dry Southern Italy
  • Recent mechanical work by specialists Tanc Barratt and Omicron
  • Exceedingly original throughout

The Appeal

All Fulvias are created equal, but some are more equal than others.

Allow us to explain. To the untrained eye, this 1971 example looks much alike any other Fulvia Coupé. But its charging elephant badges and '1600 HF' script betray it to be something very special indeed. Here we have a commendably original example of the rally-derived 1600 HF Lusso Series II.

The Lusso models are wolves in sheep's clothing, retaining the bumpers and interior trim of standard road-going models while harbouring the mechanicals of the homologation special race/rally car. Just 3,690 examples were ever made, and originals are exceedingly rare since many Lussos have been subsequently converted to tribute competition cars.

The vendor is this Lancia's first registered keeper since it was imported from dry Southern Italy in late 2021. Since then, it's been garaged 24/7 and has benefitted from professional attention with well-respected UK Lancia specialists Tanc Barratt and Omicron.

Presented in fantastic and highly original condition, this HF Lusso represents an incredible opportunity for British Lancisti. It's road registered, exempt from road tax/MOT and ready to go.

The History and Paperwork

  • 58,601 km indicated
  • Year registered in June 1971 in Milan
  • Imported from southern Italy in late 2021
  • Purchased by the vendor in February 2022
  • Garaged 24/7 throughout current ownership
  • Matching colours
  • Italian registration booklet and paperwork present
  • February 2024 invoice from Tanc Barratt totalling £7050
  • V5C present
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT

The Condition

  • Maroon paintwork presents very well overall, with light age-commensurate patina
  • Smart chrome finishes, with gentle wear only
  • Original Cromodora alloy wheels in very presentable order, shod with modern tread pattern Michelin tyres
  • Clean and well-presented underside
  • Rare original Lusso interior in very smart condition
  • Minimal wear to the upholstery, controls and switchgear
As we mentioned earlier, it's not at all easy to find a Series II 1600 HF Lusso that hasn't been converted into some sort of rally replica. It's rarer still to find such a car outside of Italy, so this 1971 example is a real treat for the enthusiast.

As the photographs show, this Lancia remains highly original and in eminently presentable condition. It's not a Concours show car - and it's all the better for it. A few small paint chips are highlighted in the photographs, and gentle wear to the oh-so original interior. But there's certainly no notable wear or deterioration to report, and that all-important bodywork looks to be in very straight, sound order. it certainly helps that this car spent most of its life in the dry climes of Southern Italy, and the vendor has been sure to keep it garaged throughout its short spell in the rather damper UK.

The Mechanics

  • 1.6-litre DOHC V4
  • Five-speed 'dog-leg' manual gearbox
  • Engine tuned by Tanc Barrett
  • Carburettors overhauled by Omicron
  • New subframe mounting by Tanc Barrett
  • Brake callipers replaced
  • Sump guard fitted
All looks in very healthy order under this Fulvia's bonnet and we're assured that it is a "delight to drive" thanks to recent attention from the UK's foremost classic Lancia specialists. As the invoices (included below) attest, a great deal of work has been carried out in recent years, resulting in a Fulvia that's ready to be enjoyed now that Spring is finally here.
