The Appeal
It wasn’t an obvious idea, but it was certainly an inspired one. When Carlo Abarth took Fiat’s city car and turned it into a giant-slaying race car, he delivered one of his greatest creations and one of motoring’s most characterful sports ars.
Just 1,000 695 ‘esse esse’ were built and only a handful remain. The vendor believes that that this is one of them, a 1971 car that is well known in Abarth circles and has featured in the specialist book by Andrea and David Sparrow. It was raced in Belgium before arriving here in 2012.
During its time in the UK it has been extensively overhauled by none other than Ricambio, whose highly regarded Abarth specialist Toto fitted the 800cc 90bhp Abarth engine and ancilliares. The firm also attended to the gearbox, fitted discs all round and new suspension. You can tell the quality of that work from the photos. It has covered less than 100kms since completion.
This highly specified car, with its stand-out yellow paintwork and intricate decals, features a full road cage and neat details like classic bucket seats and Abarth dials. Buyers should not that it is DVLA registered as a Fiat 500L but its Abarth chassis plate is included as shown.

It is the detailing of this characterful car that really catches your eye - the 500 shape, and perhaps even the Abarth enhancements, may be familiar, but it is the decals and the impressive interior that show the quality of this car’s extensive restoration.
Finished in yellow, the bolt-on wide arches and deep dish steels show intent. Inside you’ll find Abarth-branded dials and 60s-style black buckets, all encased in a full roll cage that extends into the engine bay and bonnet.
This is a very well kept car that has been barely used since Ricambio finished its work.
The Mechanics
- 800cc 4cyl Fiat 500 engine developing 90bhp
- Very well detailed engine bay with evidence of recent work
- Car has reportedly completed less than 100 kms since completion
- All mechanical work undertaken by Toto at Ricambio
- Reported to be fitted with a 5spd gearbox
- We have no reports of running or driving issues
The original 695SS was quick for a city car, but this car is considerably quicker. Thanks to a 800cc engine built and carefully prepared by specialist Ricambiom it runs at 90bhp. We can only imagine how much fun that is on track or road.
The car is reported to have only covered less than 100 kms since completion and to be in excellent mechanical health. We understand it is ready to use with nothing required by the new keeper.
