Highlights
- Proper barn find, hidden away since 1991
- Appears mostly complete and very original
- An excellent opportunity to resurrect one of the most unusual classics of all time
The Appeal
After the immense success of the groundbreaking DS, Citroën took advantage of their recent acquisition of Maserati and borrowed a ninety-degree V6. It would go on to power what would be Citroën’s most outlandish car yet, the SM. Designed by Robert Opron, although looking like it fell from outer space, the SM was to be the brand’s first foray into luxury GTs and it certainly made an impact. They remain immensely desirable classics to this day as there’s been nothing quite like it before or since.
This 1971 example was acquired by its previous owner and marque enthusiast in 1972. They enjoyed it until 1991 before tucking it away in the corner of a barn where has remained ever since…
The History and Paperwork
- We understand that this car has only had two previous owners
- Languished in a barn since 1991
- No attempt has been made to move or start the car
- Will need to be collected with a trailer or tow truck
- The registration document is not in the seller's name
- We’re not aware of the existence of any other paperwork
- The car will be eligible in France to FFVE Attestation for registration as a vehicle of collection
- Left-hand drive French home market example
The Interior
- Looks mostly complete
- Original velour upholstery in reasonably good order
- Storage out of direct sunlight would appear to have aided the preservation of the plastics
- Nothing has been cleaned, so there is of course plenty of debris and grime
- Some glass on the back seats from the broken rear window
- Gear knob missing
- All gauges and switchgear untested
- The carpeting appears complete although quite tired
- Some corrosion to the boot floor reported by the vendor
The Exterior
- Attractive blue paintwork
- The paint has become dull and is missing in a few places
- Some corrosion to the bodywork evident
- Appears reasonably straight for an unrestored car of its age
- The enclosed lights and pumper section up front appears partially disassembled/missing
- Some rust to the wheels
The Mechanics
- 2.7-litre Maserati V6
- Five-speed manual gearbox
- Hydropneumatic suspension, steering and braking system
- Remains mechanically untested
- The vendor informs us that the running gear is present
Summary
While not one for the faint-hearted, what better honour than to say you restored a Citroën SM? This compelling project has the allure of being a proper barn find which we find very exciting!
