1971 Aston Martin DBS V8 Volante

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 1 of only 6 Banham convertibles built
  • Restoration project
  • Video evidence of the car running in 2023
  • 5340cc V8

THE APPEAL

Introduced in 1967, the DBS from Aston Martin is an exceptional luxury grand tourer built to replace the DB6. Designed by William Towns, the intention was for the DBS to have a more modern appearance and era fashionable style, its incorporation of a fastback-like rear end and squared front were very typical of automotive designs of the late 60s and early 70s.
Only 787 DBS models were produced over its five-year production, with only six being converted by Banhams to convertible, making this 1971 example an extremely rare vehicle. Featuring the desirable 5.3L V8, this car has seen little use since 1990. It is offered today as a restoration project and will provide an excellent starting point for a collector or enthusiast to restore it to its original glory.
The Volante is one of the rarest Aston Martins and with only a handful converted by Banham. This opportunity does not present itself very often and as such interested parties should take advantage of this extraordinary occasion.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Registered 20th August 1971
  • V5c present
  • 9 previous owners
  • DBS instruction book & parts catalogue
  • A small archive of part invoices predominately dated 2004/2005/2006
  • Purchased by the current owner in 2021
  • Believed to have barely moved since 1990
  • Dry stored
  • Restoration project

THE INTERIOR

  • Believed to be of the original factory trim
  • Faded with areas of patina throughout
  • Brown leather in good condition with some signs of wear
  • Reconditioning rather than replacing an option for several components
Inside the DBS you’re welcomed by superb grand-tourer comfort and sporty luxury. The layout of the dash is executed beautifully, especially the instrument cluster which displays perfectly proportionate and corresponding dials, all positioned clearly for the driver.

The brown leather is good but does display some usage, which is a similar story throughout the car. There are areas of patina but overall the interior is presented well. A retrim and reconditioning of some areas would benefit the car greatly, restoring its stately feel and providing further longevity.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Banhams Volante conversion
  • Appears solid but with several areas of wear present
  • Paint blistering, marks and dents present
The stunning design of the DBS is elevated elegantly by Banhams convertible conversion, combining open-top thrill with Aston's grand tourer sophistication was always going to be a success. The large, impactful front end, bonnet scoop and side vents help create a muscular feel to the car, heightened further by that fastback style rear end. It's a gorgeous car but does need some attention to bring it back to its best.

The paint is largely intact but with several blemishes present the car would require a bare-metal restoration and respray for it to return to its stunning former self. It is reported to be structurally very good and an ideal foundation for a restoration project.

THE MECHANICS

  • 5340cc V8 Engine
  • 5-speed manual
  • Stored and very much unused for over 30 years
  • Inspection and restoration required
As this DBS has seen little road time over the last 33 years, its current operational health is not known. We have however been informed that the engine is fully intact, the car rolls, the brakes operate and the steering works.

There isn't much history to go off but it did pass an MOT in 2011 at 65,804 miles and while that is over a decade ago, the car has only covered 9 miles since, so a good inspection and knowhow and that glorious V8 will be up and running again.

SUMMARY

1 of 6 Banham convertible conversions, this is an uber-rare Aston Martin that is begging to be back on the road. This is a sensational car and with the right know-how could be one of the finest examples and collectable Aston Martins to exist.
