1971 Alfa Romeo Spider S2

Highlights

  • Beautifully designed
  • Very recently renovated
  • Large file of invoices
  • Uprated to 2 litre

The Appeal

Alfa has consistently built a certain level of sportiness, sophistication and soul into their cars, and this S2 Spider is no exception. Designed by the great Pininfarina, the little Italian Stallion oozes charm wherever you look.

It has covered practically no miles since the renovations were completed and it looks absolutely stunning in the genuine Alfa colour AR501 Red. There’s very little that hasn’t been replaced or renovated and there are plenty of invoices to show for it too.

The History and Paperwork

  • Restoration completed just a few months ago
  • Extensive bodywork renovations
  • Benefitting from the more powerful 2-litre engine
  • Copious amount of invoices
  • Original instruction manual
  • MoT and Tax exempt

Purchased by the current owner as an unfinished restoration, this car has now been completed to a very high standard with little regard for expense along the way. The file of invoices shows just how much work was undertaken. That said, the car itself is a clear testament to the quality of the work done as it looks absolutely delightful in its original red scheme.

It also benefits from having a larger capacity 2-litre twin cam engine fitted which sounds glorious with the pair of Dellorto carburettors gulping in the air. It has covered just a handful of miles since completion and is ready to be enjoyed.

The Interior

  • Fully re-upholstered seats
  • Newly restored door cards
  • Genuine Alfa rubber mats
  • Period correct radio
  • Clear and functioning instruments

The inside of this Alfa is just as sporty as the outside with the complimenting, freshly upholstered leather seats, which includes a little rear seat too, and a big rev counter and speedo. The dashboard is in good condition with only a little damage near the glovebox.

There’s no apparent sun damage to the binnacle, which can often become cracked, and the instruments are bright, clear and most importantly for an Alfa, seem to work properly. Hazard flashers have been fitted along with a USB port and a set of electric washers, just to help bring a little modernity to the old car. The doors have fresh new cards and the floors are covered with factory rubber matting. The brand-new Mohair hood operates easily and fits perfectly, and it comes with a tonneau cover too.

The Exterior

  • Excellent quality paintwork
  • Complete with all badges and logos
  • Original factory refurbished wheels
  • Good quality chromework
  • New inner and outer sills
  • Copiously undersealed

The body of this car is a lesson in how to design a sports car - as it is just a delight to the eye. Penned by Pininfarina all those years ago in the late 60s and still looks tremendous today. This car has had a great paint job and has a delightful depth of shine to it. All the shut lines are just as good as they would have been in 1971 and the doors close with a satisfying clunk.

The chrome trim and badges are all in place and look terrific, as do the refurbished factory-fit wheels and embellishers. The light clusters are bright and clear and the headlamp covers are sparkly and clear. The boot floor is intact and painted as well as the exterior, and it houses a genuine spare wheel and original tool kit. The car hasn’t been raised to inspect the underside, but the photographs taken at ground level appear to show that everything is in good order with a good dose of underseal.

The Mechanics

  • Renovated 2-litre twin-cam engine
  • Serviced gearbox
  • New battery and electronic ignition
  • New Clutch and master cylinder
  • Rebuilt brakes
  • Renovated Dellorto carbs

The engine bay is a sight to behold as it is clean and with many new components. The engine is a renovated 2-litre version which provides a little more grunt than the original. It possesses a pair of fully serviced and balanced Dellorto carburettors which sound fabulous when the throttle pedal is pushed. Nothing has been left to chance as pretty much all the mechanicals have either been restored, serviced or replaced.

The freshly built brakes and servo along with a new clutch and master cylinder have all been attended to. The suspension and steering are just as the factory intended, but all components have been either restored or replaced. Importantly, all the electrical aspects of the car work as they should, which is often an issue for many Italian cars.

Summary

What is left to say about such a gorgeous-looking machine? Any car fanatic will tell you that everyone should own an Alfa Romeo at some point in their lives and when you take a closer look at this one, you can understand why. It has everything a sports car should have; It has two doors, an engine at the front that drives the rear wheels and looks at its best with the roof down. Beyond that, it has been lovingly renovated with little regard for expense, and it all works perfectly. Did we say It’s good-looking?

Anyway, if you have any admiration for proper sports cars you’ll grab an Italian phrase book and your Ray Ban sunglasses and get yourself an Alfa. Bellisimo!
