The Appeal
By the late 1960s, Alfa Romeo were doing very well for themselves, producing some of the most coveted sports cars on the market. The 105 Series platform was the key to their success, offering fantastic handling and competitive performance thanks to their revvy twin-cam engines and five-speed gearboxes. Motivated by the strong sales of their Bertone designed coupés and Pininfarina Spiders, Alfa turned to Ercole Spada at Carrozzeria Zagato to build them a car ‘young drivers’. What resulted was one of their most divisive creations yet - the GT Junior Zagato, which was based upon the basic floorpan of the Spider.
This 1971 example is one of just 1,108 believed to have been built. It starred in a 2013 magazine article in French publication Gazoline and remains in fantastic condition to this day. The striking Spada design looks fabulous in red and we think it one of Alfa Romeo’s most handsome coupés. Said to be driving impeccably, this is a great example that’s eminently worthy of your consideration.
The History and Paperwork

- The vehicle was bought and registered in Germany by the first Italian owner, who was an engineer living and working in Germany at the time, then when the owner moved to Italy the vehicle was registered in Italy on 13 04 1979 with the registration plate Caserta
- Subsequently, the vehicle was sold to the second owner who lived in Bondeno (Ferrara), at which time the vehicle was featured in detail in the French Gazoline publication in December 2013
- In September 2021, the third (current) owner brought the car back to Germany and re-registered it.
- The car currently resides in Germany.

The Interior
- Remains in period correct, original specification

On the inside, everything is as it should be as per period correct specifications. Rubber matting still lines the floors and black vinyl upholstery covers just about everything else. The seats remain in excellent order, as do the door cards and dashboard. The rubber matting exhibits little wear and the same can be said of the controls and headlining.
Large Jaeger instruments give you your speed and revs, while smaller instruments centrally inform you of oil pressure, water temperature and fuel level. We understand all to be in good working order, including the switchgear and period correct radio.

The Exterior

Ercole Spada didn’t hold back when he designed the GT Junior Zagato. Its angular lines were quite unlike anything else in Alfa Romeo’s range at the time and proved divisive at the time. Over time, enthusiasts have come to appreciate its quirkiness and flair, making it one of the most desirable classic Alfas around.
This example presents immensely well, with great bodywork and smart red paint. All looks to be in fine order and the vendor does not report any corrosion or damage. All the trim presents well, as does the glass and the painted steel wheels.

Where the GT Junior Zagato excelled in particular was when it was pushed hard. The capable 105 Series platform proved the perfect underpinning for this immensely compact coupé, allowing it to exploit every ounce of power from that small yet enthusiastic twin-cam engine. We’re assured this example runs very well indeed, with no faults to report. All looks in good order and very original under the bonnet.
Summary
Owing to their rarity, very seldom do you see a GT Junior Zagato on the road so if you’ve always wanted a prime example, now is the time to turn that dream into a reality. This 1971 1300 is particularly handsome and presented in fantastic, yet usable condition.
